Vermont Ride - 1-21- 06 & 1-22-06
1-22-06
48 mile ride today under the clear blue sky here in VT.
3800' of hills, according to the topo software I map my routes on.
34 degrees when I left the house, below freezing when the bike got a sponge bath upon returning.
I pedalled both sides of the Connecticut, in VT and NH, from Brattleboro to Bellows Falls.
I've tried a few new things -
The new Brooks Swallow is working well. This is my second road ride with it. (yesterday 22+ miles) It is comfrotable, no male numbness.
Leg warmers - this is the coldest I've ridden this winter - and several times I caught a chill on my knees - so out with the legwarmers I've been wearing. I already picked up some windproof tights after finishing the ride. I'll test those on the next clear, dry day.
Toe Warmers - those little chemical things you stick to your socks - they work. My toes usually go numb below 40 (even in booties). I put these on the bottom of my socks after letting em heat up and they were still generating heat long after the ride.
Ibex Icefall Jacket - coldest day wearing the jacket. Softshell, windproof and water resistant. I wore 2 Ibex wool base layers, and took a long sleeve jersey in my seatpack as an extra layer. I didn't need the extra layer - but on a few decents I did catch a chill. I'm thinking one of those frontal chest windproof bibs under the jacket would help.

Got out on the road under grey skies.
22+ miles.
45 degrees.
Followed Route 30 along the West River from Brattleboro to Newfane.
First road ride with the new saddle.
I got rained on a bit, but it was quick and the rest of the ride was dry (from the sky, at least)
Roads were grimey. Bike got a thourough bath when I got home. (first one in awhile)
Not sure I'd have gone out on the ice after the warm temps we've been having, but plenty of fishing folks were out.
Old iron bridge, out of commission:
Dummerston Covered Bridge - still in use:
