Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Going to the bathroom on the bike

Have you done it? Sometimes, i see the pros do it, especially when they want to stay in the race.

I've heard some horror stories of some of it getting on the watter bottles

Gee, I never go to the bathroom on the bike, however I have seen some riders go to the bathroom "while" on their bikes. (Sorry I couldn't resist!)

There was actually a thread on this not too long ago with much advice on how to go on the fly. I'm sure you'll find it if you do a search.

Isn't that what the slot in the saddle is for?

That sounds a bit excessive. Usually when I'm mad at my bike, I just put it in the garage and don't look at it.

One gent in our group does. He'll slow - coast / tinkle - then catch up to the group like we were sitting still.

they are pros... they are racing...

if you are just out for a solo ride.. or a club ride... stop and either find a restroom or find a tree or bush!

You'll never learn to do it if you don't practice, though.

I sweat so much that I have no water in my bladder to release. I don't ride as a pro so I guess that is why I would find a tree if need be. I can't even see the pro's having to do this too much due to fact they should sweat out their liquids.

I've sat up and went before. You do get some on your person, but in a couple mins you can't tell anyways. My ex-team-mate however, would just stand up on his pedals and go in his shorts(pee). It made for one digusting and almost violent race situation.

We were doing a stage race and cruising down the backside of a pass we had just climbed - in a pack of 35 or so. Bailly stood up, started peeing. Thing is, we were going 40+. I was hit by it, as well as the 10 guys behnd me. I was laughing the whole time, but the other racers were none too pleased. They tried to get him thrown out of the race.

Maybe it can be done the way jazz artists do it with their breathing (circular breathing). Call it circular waste where it comes out of your pores instead of your privates

these reports persist in races such as the tour de france. I have had reviewed to me the French cycling laws. Going to the bathroom on the bike may be occuring. But the laws make it illegal.

And I thought I was a mileage wh0re.

If you've never peed while riding, you have to try it. It's a liberating experience. Don't let your bladder tell you when to stop. Who's in control here?

Funny answers here. Good, entertaining thread. I have on one occasion decided I could "make it home" without stopping to urinate. Shouldn't have. Once I stood and threw the leg over the bike, the flow started. Fortunately I was in my yard sans witnesses.
