Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cliplead road pedals and ordinary shoes

I am just getting back into cycling after a gap of 30 years. Moved to clipless pedals and haven't fallen off in the three months I have been using them. Bought Shimano SPD SL - I don't walk much when I am out riding. I guess you could ride with SPD SL pedals for a short distance wearing trainers that had a good grip, but it occurs to me that it would be possible to clip a plate into the pedal that would give it a platform as secure as a conventional pedal. That plate could even have a toe clip engineered into it. Has anyone marketed such a gadget? Could be useful if you just want to go down to the shops - clip in the pedal tops and jump on the bike in your ordinary shoes and clothes.

The adapter in the above post is for SPD cleats. SPD-SL are totally different. You can find lots of adapters for SPD's, I haven't seen any for SPD-SL. I've ridden around the block with mine using tennis shoes just to see if I could. It isn't very stable - I wouldn't recommend it.

Edit: Posted at the same time as OP reply. The post I was replying to is the second post.

why go for a buckminster fuller soultion to something as simple as riding with your street shoes.

i've done it plenty of times (like traveling with my bike on a train, etc).

Are you looking for something similiar to:

https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=5245

They have look and SPD versions. I haven't been able to find a SPD-SL version.
