Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have never weighed mine and don't really care. I just love to ride it. Am I the only one?

I'm not terribly concerned, but I do care. It makes a difference.

During a race, yes.

During training, no. The heavier the better.

Reasonably apathetic here.

I'd never get out a set of scales, but I also wouldn't install a cast iron wheelset.

Actually if there's a lightweight part that I can afford and it's not on my bike I can't sleep.

I keep it in mind on the roadie, but much less so with the other bikes. It's a consideration with them, but I have to get stuff cheap before I'll buy it just to save weight. On the roadie, well, I don't go crazy light because the trade-offs are so much when you weigh 185 pounds. But lighter is generally better. I guess it's just lightest that's not worth it.

I hate that feeling. Or the local shops don't carry it and you have to wait for it to ship.

I kept track of the weights as I built up my bike and figure it's right around 20 lbs. Ever since I figured out that no single component represents more than 2% (the frame) of the total weight when I'm on the bike I haven't worried about it.

I don't care to a degree, but there is a difference between a 35lb an 20lb bike. I also chose a 500g saddle over a 150g one because comfort was priority.

I didn't know how much my Lemond Poprad weighed for >1yr when I finally became curious and stepped on a bathoom scale with it (and of course without it)

Loss Angeleez? Is that about a 3 hour drive from Lost Wages,Nevada?

My bike is about durability. Why I use Velocity Deep V on the rear. 520 grams, just the rim itself! It does fine!

Same here - I reward myself with use of my 20lb roadbike when I make weight, else go back to my 30lb cross/hybrid to punish myself. Amazing difference 10lbs seems to make even on a slight incline!

There are more important things to consider, but weight is important for performance.

I could shed the equivalent of two racing bikes off my a$$...that'd probably help with performance.

To be honest, though, if I was looking for a seatpost and it was a choice between a lighter one or heavier one, I'd buy the lighter.

I've never lost a race and thought, "Man, I could have won if I had a lighter bike." I'm always thinking, "Man, I should have chased that group," or "Man, I attacked too soon."

If I lose by 1/2 second in a sprint I'm going to be training harder, not buying new stuff.

I'm surprised they haven't banned you from this website for life for posing that question. Intellectually, I realize I shouldn't care. The Inner Weight Weenie will not be denied however. The battle rages.

Don't ask questions like this here. That's like walking into a bar and asking 'who's an alcoholic?'. Awkward.

Couldn't give a rats a$$ what it weighs. Not a pro rider so weight as long as it is not made of lead does not matter.

It feels pretty light and it is my commuter. It has to last forever, and light parts don't last forever. I buy middle of the road components and try to strap on as few unneeded parts as possible.

Beyond that, keep the pressure right and the deraileurs tuned and ride on.

I've had my current bike for 6 months now and 1100 miles and finally got around to hanging it on the scale at my LBS last Saturday. It weighs 17.8lbs with pedals, 2 bottle cages and computer w/speed & cadence sensor. I did take the seatpost bag off though.
