Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike shop in Madison, WI?

I have a new client in Madison and therefore will be spending some time here. I'd like to find a good roadie shop.

Any suggestions? Madison is allegedly one of the best cities in the country for biking so I'm expecting a couple (at least) of excellent shops.

Thanks.

Williamson, Yellow Jersey, Budget, Cronometro

Willaimson, Cronometro and Yellow Jersey are probably the best road bike bets.

I reccomend the Yellow Jersey on State Street. They always give me straightforward info, even when it might not make them a sale. In other words, they seem to be in it for the love, not the money.

Check out the Yellow Jersey web site. It may be one of the five or ten best cycling sites...lots of interesting info. It communicates that Yellow Jersey is run by folks who really love bikes and riding.

If you go into Yellow Jersey, try to speak to Andrew. He is a great font of info and a none-too-quaint view on riding tubulars even while not racing. I also love the "homemade" aspect of the Yellow Jersey web site.

Yellow Jersey is a great shop. People are knowledgeable and friendly. I also like Budget. It's a funky place. Guy started the place as his doctoral thesis and then noticed he was having more fun selling bikes than going to class.

Trek also has an outlet store, and there is an REI in town.

For places to ride, go to https://www.madisonclick.com/dir/inde...tion/Bicycling

If you are going to be in Madison, also check out Green Bush donuts, State Street Brats (that's pronounced Brahhts), the Angelic Brew Pub, Paisans Restaurant and Fraboni's Italian Grocery Store. And take a walk down State Street and around the University of Wisconsin - Madison campus.

Where do you live?

Waterford is closer to Milwaukee than Madison. From Madison, it's about 75 miles.

I live in the mid-South. Thanks for the recommendations on bike shops and other attractions.

You're only an hour or so away from Milwaukee.....road trip?
I'll take you to my LBS if you venture out of Madison at all.

One other thing - it can get cold in Madison, at least cold by your standards, during Feburary, March and April. The weather can be very changeable in the Spring. It can be sunny and pleasant in the morning. By afternoon, the temp can drop 20 degrees and it can be windy and damp. Or vice versa.

The old joke is if you don't like the weather in Wisconsin, wait 10 minutes, it will change.

What I am saying is bring appropriate clothing - tights, a decent jacket, gloves etc.

Oh, one other attraction, Babcock ice cream on the Terrace. Babcock is the name of the building in which the university's ag school is headquartered. They make the best ice cream in the United States. Hey, we are not called the dairy state for nothing.

The terrace is the outdoor area behind the UW student union. It looks out over a lake. It is a beautiful place. You can buy the ice cream in the union and then go sit outside, eat it, and watch the students and the lake.

If you don't want ice cream, go into the Rathskellar in the Union, get a beer and go sit on the terrace. I would recommend Leinie's Red.

I would second Hipcyclers invitation. If you have time for a road trip, Milwaukee has a lot of great areas to ride.

This morning, I gashed my tire on my commute. I managed to get to Yellow Jersey a few minutes before they opened. When the owner (Andy) arrived, he let me in, and gave me a new tire for free. I doubt they'd extend the same courtesy to anyone. I like to think I have a 'good customer' status, but the example does illustrate the type of service I usually get there.
