$60 Road Shoes...yes or no?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

$60 Road Shoes...yes or no?

Is it possible to buy a good pair of road shoes in the $60 price range? If so, what shoes would fit into that price range and where can you buy them?

I got a good pair of PI's for less than that, $45 or $49 through Performance...

usually less expensive shoes have flexy bottoms. at least that's been my experience. and that kills your feet after a few hours. just try to get the stiffest sole you can.

Possible? Sure. But really, there are a lot of places where you can get cheap for little to no loss. Shoes, generally, are a bad place to do that.

Depends on what you need them for. For non-competetive recreational rides you probably can. I rode a pair of $60ish shoes for about a year in my cheaper days. They were fine.

I've got that PI model. Short of racing, they're a good quality shoe. Stiff soles, lots of ventilation. I've ridden them on a couple centuries & had no issues.
If you're riding in -30 weather you'll need a full bootie & wool socks.

I have that PI '04 road shoe as well as the Vagabond II mtb shoe (they are the same shoe other than one minor difference, that and one is a road shoe and the other is a mtb shoe). They are great shoes and if they still have your size they are a great buy right now at performance. However if you don't see your size call them as when I did the person on the phone said they didn't have the size that was on the web site but they had a size that wasn't listed.

FIRST YOU MUST TRY THEM ON. Do not buy any cycling shoes unless you have had a chance to try them on first.

Check out Addidas road shoes. I bought a pair of vueltano's for about $69 from Nashbar a year ago and they have been great! Super stiff, great bindings and plenty of venting.

I bought a pair of SIDI Genius for less than $60. It was the last one on the shelf and a "last year's" model (at the time). Got lucky 'cause it was my size. So... it is possible.

A few years ago my wife bought a pair of Nashbar road shoes, new. She's got over 6000 miles on them, and she still loves 'em. I don't recall how much they were, but I know they were less than 50 bucks.

I have the Performance Forte CR 200's. They are pretty cheap. Unfortunately, the quality is, too. I just use them on the trainer.
