Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Newbie needs help

Yes, i bought a low, entry level bike on ebay, but it fits me perfectly, and it seems to be perfect for me except for my gear problems.
I've been having a few issues down there. I'm very new to the sport, so please be gentle, and i'll try to explain this the best that i can.

When im in the second (front) gear and around third and fourth (rear) gear, the chain keeps skipping from gear to gear in the back. Also, when im in the smallest of both front and back gears, my chain rubs against my front derailleur.
Any ideas?

it could be one of many problems. If your new to the sport I would suggest taking to a bike shop and having adjustments made to your deraileurs. the second problem sounds like you need to adjust your Front Der. limit screws to allow more clearance to the outside or inside, but still keeps the chain from coming off the chain rings. chain skipping can be anything from a misadjusted Rear Der., tension or indexing, to a bent derailuer or even a dirty or worn chain. your best bet is to get a shop to adjust it for you. A complete tune up is probably $40. If you still want to attempt to adjust them yourself try looking at the park tool web site they have a lot of" how to" instructions in the repair help section.

+1.....also if you are riding a triple (3 rings up front) the small front ring and the small cog in the rear is a gear combination you want to avoid. What you are experiencing in that setup is cross chaining. That is why you are rubbing your front derailleur when you use that gear.

Cheers,

Brian
