Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

i love the wind, that is side wind and tail wind. Side wind can be adventerous and tailwind is good. here in the bay area its been windy recentley (last month) around 60-70 mph winds i think. its fun going over the golden gate bridge on a soloist, side winds are great

Going over the Golden Gate in high winds gets pretty freaky, especially since the railings are only about as tall as the saddle, maybe a little higher.

Sounds like Texas today.

Against the headwind I was going 8-11 mph on the way home from work.

With the tailwind I was going 24, up a hill, on my 34# commuter

Sounds pretty normal for round here (except for the temps in the 20's).
Hit a slight downhill with strong headwind and I swear I was going backwards.

lecterman, you ride today (friday)? I tend to stay off the bike if we got
wind and freezing rain!

I'm with Lotek on the headwind. And I know I'm going backwards when I hit an uphill and a strong headwind. (Much hate for south winds on Waterview when doing the RBM rides)

50mph gusts would be enough to keep me off the bike probably. There's only so much side winds that are 'fun' till they get down right bad. Especially when they are either trying to push me into traffic or into construction zones.

Here the gusts have been up to 60mph. The average gust has been 30 or so, but during the morning ride I got a tail gust that must have been in the 50's. It was f'n great, like drafting behind a semi. This is South Central (Adams county) PA by the way.

As always, the weathermen were exaggerating. The wind was barely in the 20s- nothing too exciting at all. I never got one of those 50 mph gusts

It was some rough head, but the tail was good.
