Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I need some advice please....

Hi.... I have never bought a new bike. I did my first road race last year on a vintage Trek..and I made it just fine....I love that bike. But I was thinking it would be nice to have a newer bike for this year.Anyway, I am interested in buying a Felt 70 or a Cannondale in a similar price range. Or Trek?Anyone have any opinions on which bike line I should buy. Or should I buy a used bike from ebay with all the bells and whistles..I have seen some awesome bikes there. I am in Canada and willing to pay for shipping so location to me is not an issue.
Well hope to hear from somebody....this place looks kind of neat..hope to learn more about bikes and riding.

To reply to some of the questions. Be careful about E-bay. The bike may arrive partly assembled and you could need to go the the local bike shop (lbs) anyway to have the job finished. Also if there is a problem it can be hard to resolve. Being happy with a bike can be important if you are going to use it a lot. You liked the vintage Trek?/keep using it if that is an option. We have a Vintage Bike sub-forum. You want bells and whistles? For doing just what? Racing, touring, Commuting . . . all different. Hang around here for a while before commiting. I bought a touring bike direct from the builder who works only a two hour ride away. Otherwise I might have gotten a bike from the lbs. Support your lbs so it will be there when you need it. Yes, it can cost more but you get what you need when you need it and if something is wrong they are right there to fix it. I selected my favorite lbs more carefully then I picked my family doctor and the bike shop has treated me a lot better.

The Felt f70 would be a good road bike above entry level. The components would be somewhat better than a Trek 1200, but not as good as a 1500. My suggestion would be to test ride some similar bikes at bike shop near you to find a good size and become more familiar with newer bikes.

I am not sure why this post was moved from the road bike forum, that is where you will get the most information. Maybe put another post there.

Anyway, welcome to the forums.
