Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

There were guys on our crazy 400k last saturday that did really well with this setup. There was a 65% dropout rate. We had heavy rain and a 23 degree wind chill (Fahrenheight) for a good portion of it and the first 137 miles had a headwind that went between 25 and 50 mph all the way except for a few 1 mile segments where the road jogged east. If you are interested here is a link to my ride report:

My point about the setup being good is because of the extra 4-6 hours on the road due to conditions I was running out of batteries and the schmidt setup doesn't have this problem on rides like this.

Ouch, what a ride! Great report.

I took it out on a loop ride the other night - very windy - up to 40 mph according to the web. No rain. Not sure I'd be too happy trying to ride a full brevet in that weather.

I've spent so much time screwing with batteries, chargers, etc. and always being worried when the system would fail. I'm much more confident with the Schmidt. Aside from catasrophic wheel failure or internal hub failure, the only thing to worry about is having a few tiny, nearly weightless spare bulbs.

I'm using a 2.4w Shimano dynohub that I bought new over the internet from Singapore for a very reasonable price. I am using it with a 2.4w Lumotec light in the front and battery powered blinkies front and rear (rear is red). I do quite a bit of night time riding, mainly for practical getting around town sort of stuff, and this has helped tremendously. The cars notice it A LOT.
