STP 4 Months after ACL surgery?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

STP 4 Months after ACL surgery?

Hey Guys,

After searching through the forums it looks like quite a few of you have experience with ACL injuries.

A week ago I tore my ACL ski racing and am scheduled for reconstructive surgery on March 9th. Luckily the tear was isolated and apart from a bone bruise and a strained MCL everything is fine. My question is what do you think my odds are of being able to ride STP (a double century) roughly 4 months after surgery. That being said I understand you are not doctors and each case is specific to the individual. I am more curious about personal experiences. Thanks for your help.

What kind of shape were you in before the injury? After my 1st operation, I was on the bike 2 weeks afterwards. A month afterwards, I was doing intervals.

The thing you need to watch for is flexion. That was the hardest part about recovery, and the only thing preventing me from cycling. Work through the pain and you'll be dandy in no time. The big(pun) thing I'm having an issue with after the second surgery is the muscle I lost and the fat I gained. There is an upside to this - the muscle in the atrophied leg has more endurance for some reason. It can out-do my bigger leg.

I am in pretty decent shape right now and have gotten quite a few winter cycling miles under my belt as well as at least 2 days of skiing in every week since early December. Am i correct in assuming there is little risk of injuring the new ACL cycling during the recovery stage (provided i dont stick my leg out at speed)?

If they need to harvest from your patellar ligament, your new ACL will instantly be 150% stronger than your old one. Take your anti-Inflammatories and get back on the road.

I don't recall all the details but when I did the RAW (Ride across Wash) in 99, there was a guy who had knee replacement surgery, I believe, in May of that year and was pedaling quite well in late August the 400 miles and 20,000 feet of elevation gain. But I don't know if bone replacement does less damage than cartilege fix-ups.

Good luck with recovery.

Thanks for your replies. Does anybody else have any ACL stories to share?

I had reconstructive ACL surgery in 1991 (March 3rd). The rehab was tough but in August I rode a 600 mile, 8 day tour through Montana and Wyoming without any issues whtsoever. From what I understand the surgical techniques are vastly improved so you should have minimal problems (BTW - I was 39 at the time)

Thanks for your input - I have the piece of mind I was looking for! At 20 years old I think I should be back and ready to go in no time (with the right rehab).

Awe man. I totally feel for you. I had torn my ACL years ago and got the patella graft. Some people get a hamstring graft, but I think the patella graft is more common.

The problem I have now is a lot of pain in the front of my knee when kneeling. When riding, I got awful pain in the front of my knee when pushing down hard especially during hard efforts like climbing. It's just about ruined my experience with cycling. I don;t know man. I hear some people just get this pain like I have afterwards and some don't. Not sure why though. Good luck to you.

I haven't had the surgery but I've ridden STP and plan to ride it this year. It's as easy as it gets for a double century, so I think you've picked the right event.

Have you talked to your doctor about your plans? See if you can get referred to a therapist who specializes in cyclists or is a rider. You might be able to get a decent training plan for therapy...

I read that 20 year old part..... made me laugh.

You'll be up and about in no time.

I had my ACL replaced at 57. They used a cadaver replacement. I also had some cartlidge (miniscus) damage which the doctor was more concerned about. I was back on the trainer in a few days, and was doing 30 to 50 mile outdoor rides with my regular bunch of characters (ex racers and wannabes) in a month. I did a few metric centuries in the first three months, all well under 3 hours ride time.
