Need Advice on Inexpensive Starter Roadie
Hi All!
I've got the bug to go cycling, for the first time in years. It seems that it's nearly impossible to find a road bike at the big box retailers. They're all mountain bikes. Then you have the LBS's but they seem pretty expensive. And I really don't know what I need. So let's just say, I'd like something for under $300, can be new or used but if used it must be in great shape. I'm about 5'10" in decent shape but no athlete and live in a great area for road biking.
Any help you can throw my way will be appreciated!

Most oft advice in that price range is to go used. You'll get a better deal. Beware of all the thievery on fleabay though, there seems to be a rash of hijacked accounts selling bikes. If you find something you like, ask here, these guys and gals are good at spotting ripoffs. If you're willing to spend a little more look at the 'Under $700...' thread. Good advice in there.
You say you're in decent shape...what do you plan to do with the bike? Race, group rides, touring, distance rides? It all makes a difference in what bike you get. Put a lot of thougt into that question and definitely think ahead. I bought my bike on the premise that I know I'll wanna do long distance rides and the weekly rabbit chasing with the local group.

Hi TAinOP,
welcome aboard! If you're just getting going and serious about keeping to a $300 cap:
1) you might check your local classified ads, Penny Saver, etc. There are a LOT of old bikes in garages and basements -- you might even put in a 'bike wanted' ad and see what turns up
2) definitely try to hook up with the local cycling club and be honest about where you're starting and what you'd like to try. You may come across someone in the process of upgrading or who has an old beater that they'd be willing to part with; heck, there may be someone willing to loan you their beater while you're looking around
3) if you can push the investment into the $500 - $600 range, as Doggus mentioned check out the Under $700 thread for good advice
4) I've seen a few pics posted on BF of relatively decent old bikes that have been picked up at thrift shops -- you'll probably not get top drawer componentry, but it might be enough to get you going
good luck and have fun shopping! [and yeah, I'd strongly second the advice to avoid eBay right now]
cheers,
Johnny

Thanks. I should've gone into more detail than "I'm in okay shape." I am not a speed racer but I would like to work my way up to some long-distance challenges. I'll probably do some club touring until I get my bike legs back and then try some longer rides.
I used to ride 10 - 20 miles a day in my youth but it's been 20 years since I rode regularly.
So, while I know that lighter is better, I probably don't need what Lance Armstrong rides. At the same time, I don't need something that's going to make me work harder than I need to. Right?
Thanks again.

Try https://kansascity.craigslist.org/
for used bikes. You can usually find a few to choose from and there are new listings everyday.
