You know that nice, hard carbon sole on your shoes? Yeah. Makes a nice impression, if you get me, when a skillful kick is aimed at a dog.

LOL I thought the same thing when I read it. By the way how the heck do I get rid of that last little bit of love handle. Last year had a 6 pack and handles really pissed me off.

bike pump - too expensive to bend on a dog's head.
So I bought a small disposable air horn that runs on CO2 cartidges at Wal-Mart for 6.00. It fits in my jersey pocket, you can use it with one hand, you don't have to stop riding, you don't have to be coordinated to use it, no visible signs of an altercation to explain away to mr nasty owner.
I have yet to use it on fido, but I'm pretty confident because it scares the $%^ out of me.

i've seriously considered either (1) after the ride going and shooting the dog or (2) taking the gun with me on the bike. i'm a dog lover, but too many times they have risked my life by nearly crashing my on a fast decent.

I have to say I like the small air horn idea tooo. I'm going to give this a try. But dog biscuits have worked in the past as has sprinting.

I've never personally had to deal with loose dogs, but am pretty interested in this thread as it seems a lot of people in my complex of town houses own pitbulls. It's some sort of cultural phenomenon. With the exception of the 'labra-doodle" across the way and my dog, the people around here almost exclusively own pitbulls. And none of them pick up after their pets either (totally a different rant) It must be a case of keeping up with the Jones's or something (i.e., they see a neighbor with a pit, so they have to have one) because it's a statistical imposibility that everybody decided to get a pitbull within the last two years.

I love dogs. You have to be sure to marinate them overnight, or they'll be tough, though.
Just kidding, I'm a dog owner, and I use pepper spray when necessary - no long term damage. If it pisses off the owner, tough, I'll use it on him if I have too. By not restraining his animals, he's endangering me and them.
I have a personal interest in this thread. Sixteen years ago an unleashed dog came charging out of his yard, and directly in front of me. The crash broke my right arm, gave me a concussion, and required three surgeries to fix everything. Yes, it gave me an attitude.
Sometime last summer, I was doing a favorite 50k loop of mine, when two dogs charged me. It was the 3rd dog "incident" of that particular day. I got so mad, I clamped down on the brakes and locked both wheels, and skidded to a stop. I turned around and started screaming at the dogs (YOU WANT A PIECE OF ME? COMEON!) and began to chase them. They stumbled all over themselves trying to get away. Chased them all the way back to their house.
The next day I rode by again, and saw them both sitting in their front yard. They didn't move.

I typically slow down and start shouting commands at them (sit, go home, %&%&). I have a couple of big dogs so I just try what works with them. If this does not work I sprint or stop and get off my bike if I’m tired. The sprinting is fun so long as they can't catch you

I love dogs, but not when I'm on my bike. I hear that ammonia water works really well, but knowing my luck, I'd probably drink it on accident.
Funny you should mention that. In this past weekend's Tour de Murrieta, the Sunday road race went through some more rural areas, and apparently a dog decided to attack the Cat 4 peloton. As the story goes, the little yappy-dog lunged at a rider's rear tire, got plowed into by the rider behind that wheel, was flipped into the air and hit again by the next rider over. The first rider to hit it crashed, but wasn't badly hurt.
I was working doing traffic control after I raced and I saw animal control show up, so maybe they took care of the stupid mutt.

So, lemon in a water bottle should do it. And hey, lemon in water tastes good.

Getting off the bike and putting it between a large dog and you can be very effective. Unfortunately, getting off the bike is completely useless against more than one dog.
Being calm, moving predictably while keeping your hands and arms close to you, and not acting scared can make a huge difference. I've also had good luck challenging dogs directly. Don't do this unless you are really willing to fight -- dogs can tell the difference.

Or scraped it off of the pavement so the bones wouldn't puncture the tires of other riders.
