Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The beauty of washing it before putting it away for the winter is that it's nice and clean when you bring it back out. Big boost in the psychological department. Other than that, a bit of caked on grease and dirt won't necessarily damage the bike.

If you store your bike in the living room, your wife may insist, mine does!

It's not very good on the clear coat, because grease, oil, and grit will degrade the finish slowly over time. But, if it's an old beater, who cares?

I personally, wash all my bikes before putting them away.

My bikes are in the bedroom, she keeps hers in the laundry room. I enjoy cleaning my bike. In fact after I washed it yesterday, I discovered this stuff called Dazzle by Zepp. Talk about a shine! I try to pay attention to everything and clean everything.

These infidels speak of heresy. Quick! Round them up for a harsh lashing!

Well said!

On a related matter, has anyone ever heard of pressure washing (low pressure) their rides? I recall a team mechanic on a cycling DVD (HoW or Overcomming I think, but don't quote me on that) do this. I have thought about doing this may times, especially after a snow/sleet ride or at least with my MTB. Anyone try or do this regularly?

I'm sorry, but Austin cyclists do not understand “putting a bike away for the winter.” It’s not that we don’t have winter, we do. This year winter was on a Wednesday, it didn't mess up any weekends.
Ride On!
