Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bike shorts and my two boys

Hi guys,

Just purhased my first pair of bike shorts, Voler Equipe Cycling Short Large. I tried them on, the waist is okay, a bit snug but I can deal with that. The length is perfect, right above the knee. The only problem, if it is even a prbolem, it seems my two guys are a bit snug. The pad seems to be lifting them up and they are being pressed against my lower abdominal wall. Is this normal? How do your shorts fit you? Should I try a larger size?

I am 5'8" 195 lbs and ordered a large.

They're not going to be loose like boxer shorts if that's what you're wondering. It shouldn't be really uncomfortable, but it should probably feel a little different. I've been wearing bike shorts for many years and still have to squirm once in a while to get (and stay) comfy. Anyhow, IANAD, so YMMV.

I'm 5'10' 185 and I used to buy large in PI's and Performance brand. Things always seemed to move around too much. Then I bought a pair of Voler's from my club in a Medium and snug is good! Much less chafing, more comfort.

(16K time trial, kicked my butt!)

Many quality bibs will feel too snug when standing, but work well on the bike. The snugness helps keep the boys in one place - without shifting around.

that, in fact does not sound perfect. of all the things the lance haters have to say, there's definitely one thing i can agree on with them: he created the hideous fashion of shorts that are too long.

IMO - if it ends just above your knee, then they're too long, and look fredish.

for the past 4 years i've dropped the plural, and only have a 'boy'. back in the day, that sounded normal for my boys, and these days i'd really be irritated if my 'boy' was flopping about.

at 5'8" you really should not go any larger, if anything i'd suggest going with a medium.

ride safe, and don't forget to spread a l'il chamois creme on your 'taint!

Thanks for the replies, can always count on this forum for quick answers from seasoned vets.

I took a quick spin last night with my new shorts. Good stuff, the padding is great and the shorts, though tight, definitely keeps everything in check. Have to get use to the diaper feeling.

Someone asked me if I had purchased a bib. Not yet, that is the next article I will shoot for.

Followup questions:

1-Cleaning them. I believe I read on this forum that some people clean by hand. To those who do, do it involve cleaning them in the sink with some tide and subsequently hanging them to air dry?

2-Can you wear a pair of adidas mesh shorts over the regular shorts on a colder night. Does this have any disadvantages?

answers:

i handwash my shorts (no washing machine) using a handwash detergent. i also take my stuff to the laundry, and i use something like woolite. as stated above - do not put them in a dryer!

regarding your second question - if you think it's too cold to only wear shorts, then get some tights to wear over them.

IMHO, if you have the "diaper feeling" the chamois is too thick... I have a couple of pairs of shorts I never wear because they feel like that. Other pairs of Louis Garneau shorts I own have a thin chamois and don't have the diaper feeling at all.

you can wash shorts in the washing machine, just put them in with some other clothing, use WARM water only (not hot!) and the gentle/delicate cycle. rough agitation in a top loading machine will ruin them, but most machines' delicate cycle is fine. air dry only! never use a hot air dryer.

IMO if i don't have the 'diaper feeling', then i'm not that comfortable. that's probably because i've been wearing assos for the past 2.5 years, and now that i'm used to the best, most of my other bibs feel odd or uncomfortable.

One thing about the temp of the water - check the tags. I generally wash in COLD.
