Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ultegra/OP or Xero XR-1

I need a pair of wheels for my new bike. However, there is one problem. I spent too much on other components that I'm out of money for my wheels So I need a pair that is around $300 range. Since there are many good reviews regarding Ultegra/OP and DA/OP, These wheels are on my list, but I'm worried about their weight. How much do they weight? Also, I saw XERO XR-1 wheels on ebay and they are light and cheap. I'm not sure if they can hold my weight though....I weight 175lbs.

Any thought?
Thanks

If you weigh 175, the weight of your wheels hardly matters. Get something that is durable and easy to maintain.

I have the xr-1's and I weigh 185. No problems yet.
I'm sure you'll get plenty of responses from the "OpenPro/Ultegra($200atPerformance)" crowd.

Take a look at these

no import duties for you.

Good to hear you don't have problems with XR-1

I actually did asked KULT about the wheels and they said they do not recommend anybody over 170lbs to use the wheels

I just finished the first metric of the year on my brand new XR-1s. Most of it was on, let's say less than smooth roads, and had no problems at all. They did fine. I've probably only got about 100 miles on the wheels, and, again, no problems to speak of. They climb really wellin the mountains. The metic I did was was flat as a table top. Both extremes, and the wheels perform great. BTW, I weigh 165.

I was going to say Ultegra "factory" wheel sets like that usually can be had for $250 US new on Ebay. I've been wanting to build a bike with them with full ultegra 10 parts including ultegra seatpost....Just because.

I also have the XR-1's and weigh about 175#. Only a few rides on them so far, but they seem to be a great bang for your buck wheel. And at 30mm, nice and aero as well.

I'm almost done ordering every parts for my new bike except wheels and seatpost. Man I'm way over my budget. I might have to sell my organs to payoff my credit card bill . Anyway, I think I'm going to order XR-1. Thanks everybody

the ultegra/op rim combo is pretty bombproof and for 210$ you cant go wrong. I would have a hard time going with anything else for that price. My coach has had a set of these wheels for over 10years and well over 90000 miles on them and he has yet to have a problem with them. Great training wheels...what Im gettin on my bike!

Only problem I've heard with Xero Formula wheels is that the rear hub is prone to howl when it gets old.

obviously ultegra hubs are top notch and a known quantity.

Really? I know that they had a lot of problems with pre-'05 wheels, but not the newer one's.
