Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Chorus or Record

I am just a bout to order a group for my old frame and want to try campy. I have left over post and bars and such but am going to need a group and wheels so trying to decide. Can anyone tell the diference in shifting or finish quality between the two?

P.S.
Anyone know what the import fees are from PROBIKEKIT.com?

Thanks
Matt

Record is just a tad bit lighter. Unless you have extra money to spend, just get chrorus, you will be more than happy with it.

There were no fees ffrom probikekit when I got my stuff from them. I also got some stuff from www.11speed.com who has slightly better prices than the rest, and still didn't pay any fees, although some have said they did, I personally did not.

Good to know Patriot. Think I am going to order a chorus group and some 2005 Euros wheels on Monday. I used to chuckle at these OCP things but now you guys have sucked me in.

I would certainly hope that the "President, OCP" ordered a full-on Record gruppo.

Hmmm. A recall vote may be in order, then.

Is this a racing bike that your going to be racing? if not then why such a expensive group choice? You said it's an old bike so why not use the Campy Centaur? It's a less expensive group but yet still a fantastic group and better then Shimano Ultegra...oops, sorry not wars please; and you could race on it if you get the urge. Or you could save even more money and go with Campy Veloce and be on par with Ultegra.

I have Chorus and Record on two different bikes. I never ride them at the same time, but the thing that impresses me about the Record is that it finishes each shift before I can let go of the lever. It seems to be slightly faster. It may be just the placebo effect. I'm told Record is made in Italy and the other groups are made in Taiwan. I don't know if this is true but rumor has it that way. The Record cassette is noticeably lighter as are the brakes (titanium.) The Record FD has a CF plate and the cage arm of the RD is CF also. That's probably a little weight saving but mostly bling.

My Chorus bike has Centaur around the bottom bracket so I'm just talking about the rear end of the drive train and the control levers but I think the Record shifts with a little less pressure on the controls than Chorus. Not much. Chorus is no slouch. After all, it is the second best group available on the market with Dura Ace following as a distant third. That ought to get the Shimanuts out in force.

If you can afford record and you buy chorus, you will of course have to resign from the ocp club.

Only because I couldn't afford Record.

Actually, it was because I already have a Record weight weenie bike called TRINTIY. I wanted more of a fast cruiser when I built my Ti machine, as I knew it would weigh in around 17lbs instead of sub-15 like Trinity. So, Record wouldn't have helped much.

I also wanted to see how differant the groups feel. Honestly? I don't feel any differance. If the Record shifters are a little easier to shift, then I would need some serious testing equipment to check that, since the '05 Chorus shifters and ders are basically '04 Records. They have exactly the same parts. The new Record just upgraded the cages on the ders, and trimmed a little more weight from the shifters. That's about it.

No fees if ordering a groupset from Probikekit...excellent place to buy from, 10 minutes ago I received my Centaur group for a new build on a new frame..Patriot is right 11speed slightly better prices but with free shipping at Probikekit, that is the sweet spot now...also be prepared to wait, no tracking numbers, you just open the door one day and voilla, a blue plastic bag with all your sweet campy components inside

Out of curoisity, I would check the prices against what GVHBikes.com sells for. Note that they list only Full Build Kits in their pricing. You would probably need to speak to someone live to remove what you already have from the pricing.
