Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cycling Cups

Hi all,

So, I have worn bibs for the last 400 miles of riding. Before that, I used vintage cycling pants which do not pull against the vital parts as much because these pants are non padded. I ride everyday since I started the beginning of 2005 summer. However, the more I ride the more I realize that my vital organ gets squished, and as a guy, this is not comfortable to say the least. The chamois padding is good but I feel that it is part of the problem as my non chamois pants don't pull against the crotch as much. However, these non-chamois shorts/pants are painful during long rides as they offer little padding for my tush. For this reason, I'm facing a dilemma: butt comfort or crotch comfort but not both. So I decided to stay with chamois but wonder if I can find cycling cups, you know the ones football players wear, but are designed specifically for cycling? I plan to buy about 5 so where there are discounts would be much appreciated. If these do not exist, can someone offer some recommendations as to how I can achieve both tush and crotch comfort? For some reason, I really like these smileys so excuse my overuse.

I don't know what kind of cup you are talking about but if you have ever worn a regular athletic cup you can imagine how painful it would be. Imagine that dull rubber edge grinding into the area around you privates for hours on end, probably have severe numbness and/or damage to blood vescicles that run around that area. Just pull your shorts up tight and pack your junk so that they don't hang down between the seat and you body. It feels kind of funny standing around but it is much more comfortable when you are riding. I used to just pull the shorts up and that was it, but you need to pull them up adjust, pull them up again and adjust, as many times as necessary to get everything situated out of harms way.

I hoped you washed them some time in between.
Anyway as previous poster said try to adjust them. What I found to help is stretching. One foot forward, making 90 degree angle, other foot back stretched. Seems to adjust the shamy quit nicely, and stretches muscles before the ride.
