Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ride Report:Beating myself into the ground!

The week prior to Sunday’s big ride at Crowder’s Mountain I really slowed my riding/training down. I wanted to be real fresh for this group ride that was going to take place that afternoon. My intentions were to go as hard as I could since time allowed me to only do the 40 mile course instead of the 60.

Anyway, around 1:15pm that nice Sunday afternoon 200 riders took off with me somewhere in the front 50 or so. I knew there would be no way to catch the leading group since it consisted of Cat 1/2 riders, and the like. But, I made it my goal to catch as many as I could who fell off the back and not get passed by anyone else. I met that goal. I continued to spot riders and work my way to them – without any help. At one point, however, I did meet up with a sole rider on a Tri bike that seemed to be kicking it pretty hard. We decided to use each other to increase our speeds. Each of us took turns battling the wind and hills. It worked really well. At one point, around 20 or so miles into the ride, I checked my average speed and it was 20.3mph. I was stoked. We continued on and made our way around other riders who tried to hold on to us but couldn’t. Unfortunately, we had to separate when the 60 mile course and 40 mile course split. I was on my own once again. And then the rollers came – big rollers.

My legs were getting really tired. Some of the hills seemed to last forever and I wanted to just get off the bike and walk. I never did and really tried as hard as I could to keep my pace up. Eventually – thank God – I made it to the park entrance where it all began.

I finished with a 19.5mph average. This is my fastest average for this type of terrain and mileage. I’m pretty excited about it.
The downside is that I’m still drained.

Thanks for reading.

Noticed your zip code and Crowder's Mtn. That in Cleveland County? Sounds familar to me but can't quite put my finger on that mtn.

Great race dude! I am doing the pre-CNC and the Fletcher Flyer in June so I hope to be in good enough shape to at least beat a few of those riders.

Zip code is Belmont - near Charlotte. But I work in Shelby. I also do my Saturday group rides in Shelby. Great places to ride in this area.

Good luck!
