Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help w/route to NJ from nyc

i am going to call in sick tomorrow to go on a VERY LONG needed ride away from NYC. I am on the upper east side pretty close to central park. I have ridden over the gwb a few times but i dont remember how i got to the bridge. i would like to do a decent amount of riding along with some hills hopefully. Can someone help me out, does anyone know of queue sheets or aything that habe the route?

Cross the GWB again and head into the Palisades and north on 9W. Good shoulder for riding on this road. Be ready from some super climbs on river road.
Follow the link below for a map of last year's MS bike tour...follow that. If not, do what I do. Use Google Earth to map out routes from your house. It has a "Measure" tool that lets you calculate distance. Have fun!

No, River Rd. goes right along the Hudson at the base of the Palisades. To get on River Rd., when you get off the GW bridge turn left onto Hudson Terrace heading south, follow the sign to River Rd. and in about 1/4 mile near the base of a steep hill you'll see a gated entrance on your left with some small boulders. That's the beginning of River Rd. Go a few miles north and you'll hit the Forbidden Hill. It ends at the police station where you can turn left and hit 9W. Last I heard they were re-paving the southernmost section of the road.

If you want some nice rides, go to www.nycc.org, click on Rides at the top, then Ride Library at the left, and find one in Rockland/Orange County. I did a ride a few weeks ago up to Newburgh, it was an absolutely beautiful route on Mine Rd., Storm King Hwy, and I could have gone on to Poughkeepsie but the hills destroyed my legs. You could also do a route on the eastern side of the Hudson through Westchester or turn east and head into Connecticut.

just went over the bridge today, and up 9w a bit, for the first time, and i must say i was quite suprised that there were so many other cyclist. Almost ran out of steam on my return home, back in brooklyn, but still fun, and helped lift a load of the college final stress buildup

Jimbo from the GWB to Brooklyn Heights alone is about 14 miles so that's 28+ miles not even counting your ride in NJ. How many did you do in total??

So did the OP figure out the route? The little ramp for the GWB path is on 178th St, but it goes the wrong way on the way out so you need to go around on 177th. Look here (PDF bike map of NYC) in the upper-leftcorner for a diagram.

not really sure, but it was the most i have ever cycled in a single sitting. I know i went all through nj, back to ny, and was by nyack, but cut away from the water and went more inland, went by the nanuet mall, then up to clarkstown. I did it all without a map, and was trying to get to an aunts house, so i ended up calling her and she provided directions, so i cant recall my exact route so i don't have a precise distance, but i guessd a few routes using a pedometer map and averaged about 25 miles from the gw bridge to clarkstown, specifically laurel road. So 25ish plus 14, plus another 5 or 6 from bklyn heights to marine park, sp one way i covered about 45 miles so thats about 90 both ways.

Wow, didnt realize that it had been that much, and ultimately i can't believe i dd it all on my fixed gear bike.

To GWB, go up Riverside, right on 165th (oboeguy can verify this), first left, past the hospital, left at 177th, first right, next right and on to the ramp on 178th St. If you're going to Piermont or Nyack, go north up Hudson Terrace, right on Sylvan (?), then right on to 9W. Do not get on the Palisades! 9W's after the entrance to the Palisades. For cue sheets and ride suggestions, check here: https://www.roberts-1.com/bikehudson/

More like 8 miles straight up Flatbush from Ave. U to Tillary St. What gears you running on the Langster?

48x17, actually thinking of going with an smaller fixed cog now, casue i have more of a problem with spinning at 120+ rpm on the cranks on downhills, then i do with climbing uphill.

Another 9W Question

Is is worthwhile to go south off the bridge to go down River Road to get down to the river and ride that North?

Seems like a quieter, nicer ride.

Or is it just better to take 9W? Or a combination? I would quess from what I have read that road conditions, hills, and traffic all contribute to the equation.

Having never done it, I am eager to do so, but don't want to wind up on a cinder path, going uphill with lions and tigers and bears all around me. Oh my!
