Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hey Roadies, we've turned the page

It just dawned on me....
For most of us, we're talking about riding outside again on a regular basis.

Winter has officially drifted away.

Come to think of it, I might as well pull the backup bike off the trainer in the cycling room.
I can't imagine having to get back on that thing now after this taste of spring, even with as windy as it has been.

It sure would be nice if it stopped raining for a day or two.

I'll ride in the rain, just not very high.

I rode in the downpour last week in Southern California. The bike trails were totally empty and I had them all to myself.

+1... san francisco bay area had 25 days of rain in March, and is projected to have 20+ days of rain this April. Good excuse to do soggy intervals on the 48x16 fixie.

Very funny.

I meant not very high into the mountains. Getting soaked at the top of a mountain with a couple thousand foot descent to look forward to is not a lot of fun.

I've been riding outside and found I don't have the endurance that I had before. Hope to work that out.

20+ days in April??? The Grizzly Peak Century is coming in 25 days and we still have more than 10 days of rain to go through. That makes for a short training. I hate it.

Winter

It's Been A Pretty Mild Winter On Long Island. Only A Few Days In The Low 20's. I Rode All Winter Long. The Few Days It Snowed I Just Went On The Trails With My Mountain Bike. Did My Rollers And Trainer Once A Week To Do Some Intervals. Feel So Much Better Riding All Year Round Then The Slump I Had To Get Out Of After Last Winter. I Will Say This, I Cant Wait To Wear Shorts Instead Of Tights.

Yeah...its hard for me to go to spin classes, when its possible to ride outside. I still need to try to go once a week or so though, cause the intervals are good for me, and I'm not good at making myself do stuff like that solo.

I feel so under-dressed going biking now skin showing and all

Today was the first day of Spring from my reckoning - the first day over 70 degrees. I celebrated with a short bike ride. It was short because of the 19 mph winds that were gusting to 26 mph. I about beat myself up trying to maintain 11 mph on flat land into that wind. Ah well, the downwind leg was fun. Welcome Spring.

I don't care how rainy it is anymore. I refuse to ride the rollers until winter.
At least it's warmer out. Besides, riding in the elements just makes you tougher.
It builds character.........what type of character remains to be seen.

My Giant stays on my trainer year round ..... you just never know when you might need it, and there is still a pretty good chance that it will snow in the next month.

Still runnin' studded snow tires, eh Machka?

I for one am glad summer is on the way. I don't mind riding to work in the ocassional rain, but every ride for like 3 months gets a little tiring. Can you blame me for getting fenders?

I've been moving from one house to the next, replacing light fixtures, door hardware, planting trees, and getting used to my orthotics. And when I get a chance to sneak in a ride, the wind is blowing 30mph. I came flying down 4 Mile Post and as I got into a curve at 42mph, the wind hit me sideways, a very scary feeling it is to have the bike shimmy on you at such a time.

BTW, I've ordered some new cranks, 170mm FSA Gossamer compact to replace my 175mm ones. If anybody would like the old ones, shoot me a pm. They come with the Mega EXO bracket.

I went on a group ride last night. I was a little upset that I hadn't bothered to wear leg warmers or a jacket. About a third of the way into the ride, wonder of wonders, a warm breeze blew in from the south. For the first time since October it was warm. And not just not cold. Warm - even by the lake. Craziness.

Yes and there have been some nice potholes made by this heavy winter. Ride safe.
