Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A week of personal bests...

I broke 500 miles for the year (542) - versus 656 for all of 2005.

I had my first (exactly) 100 mile week - previous best was 74.

I hung in for my longest group ride yet - 45 miles total.

I beat my personal best average speed on a distance ride - 17.6 mph over said 45 mile ride.

All in all, a great week!

If your at 542 now you'll do 3-4k easily if you keep motivation high in the waning Fall months. Congrats

That is a great week, congrats!

I broke 600 miles last week and should break 700 this week. May not seem like a big deal to many, but this is my first year of cycling (I started in January) and I am really happy with the progress I've made. Can't wait to break 1,000 miles...then 2,000...then 3,000.....

Must be a lucky week, as I was breaking all of my personal bests too!

Set a personal best for mileage in a week (220, previous was 200)
Set a personal best avg. speed for a 10 mile flat TT (23.5mph, never broke 23mph before)
Set a personal best time on my local climb (11:10 on a climb 2.1 miles long and 850ft high, previous best was 12:10)
Best placing I've ever had in a race (6th)

Congrats to you, and here's to continued success and a great season!

I broke 1,100 miles for the year this past week, did two hard back-to-back rides (which I don't do very often) on Monday and Tuesday and felt great, and had my fastest time around my 35 mile loop (17.8 mph) on Friday that I use to judge my fitness for medium length rides.

Was hoping to get a 70 mile ride in today, but that didn't happen. Ah well.....if I did that, it would've been my best week to date.

Sounds like good years abound!

There are 15 weeks down, 37 to go.

Of the 15, I had 5 "0" weeks. That's WAYYY too many for a quarter (+).

I'm getting in a groove now, so I expect good things by year's end.

I had 2 "0" weeks....first one was in January, as I was on vacation (and came back with a cold), the second was in Feb. and had a bad chest cold. I have 48 riding days so far this year, which is well under what I had planned on.....but, I don't let it discourage me.

I just passed 250 miles on my new bike. I hadn't cycled at all until mid march, so i think i'm on a good pace. My schedule is looking good the next couple months for lots of riding, like 3-4 times a week. what do you guys suggest for training by combining climbs with flats for a beginner? here in SoCal there are tons of hills to pick from...

Congrats, OP! What's your goal for the year? This thread reminded me to record my Saturday ride and it looks like I just got past 2000km for the year. Yay! I'm a little behind the pace 8000km for the year but I still think I will get there as better weather / being later in the season leads to increased weekly mileage. Somehow I've managed "zero zero weeks" so far, despite illness and travel.

Bleh, I'm barely over 400 mi for the year. I can't wait for Jess's Fierte to arrive so we can start hitting our long weekend ride as opposed to this 15-20 mi crap.

This week was the first time I broke 100 miles in a week. 100.7 exactly.

I do a very, very hilly 23-mile loop from my house about 3 days each week. I usually finish at around 17.2 when I'm HR training, and 17.7 was my personal best the last time I tried to push it on the climbs back in February.

Today, I was a little aggravated by my girlfriend's mother and did it in 18.6, and had plenty left for the sprint home. I'm thinking I need to get in a fight with her the morning of Mt. Mitchell.

Been commuting all winter, 665miles as of yesterday. I have century lined up next month so at my current rate I'll tip a 1K by end of May. That will also mark my first complete year of cycling .

The realistic goal is 2000 miles, with a stretch goal of 4000. It's the 'zero' weeks that will make the 4000 a challenge.

If my experience is any indicator, the Fierte will make the long weekend rides a real pleasure. I still can't believe I did 45 miles averaging 17.6, and I give a LOT of credit to the bike!

New cycling season's are great! Congratulations on the best week!

I didn't do a breakdown of stuff last year, but this year I'm recording stuff at bikejournal.com. Its a great tool! I'm only at 340 miles for the year, but I really hope to break 3000 by the end of 2006
