Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So there's a pothole dead ahead...

So there's a pothole dead ahead...

your going along the road quickly, and then to your horror you suddenly see a wide and deep pothole dead ahead in your path you had not noticed in time - what do you do?

Personally I tend to cease pedalling and brake a tad if I can; not swerve (traffic/fall!) - but the chain then clunks on the chainstay/casette etc as you hit the pothole - is it better to just brake and pedal slowly?

Bunny hop. Make sure riders behind you know you're gonna hop over... ...but that'll still be a cruel thing to do as they may not have time to react.

bunny hop is the best solution here. if you have to hit it - at least pull up on the handle bars and hit it with your back wheel - otherwise you could have a nasty flip over the bars.

if you swerve to avoid it, be mindful of cars behind you.

At least stand up a bit, unweighting the seat, and try to get a bit loose on the bars.

Bunny hop here as well, if its too late to go around it. There's a mountain road I ride on regularly that I almost always end up having to hop over a few potholes.

If it hasn't been said before...

bunny hop.

If you don't know how to bunny hop, ride real fast toward a curb...you'll learn pretty quick. I'm nowhere near as proficient a hopper as I was on my MTB and BMX bikes, and I fear the structural stability of my road wheels, but it's alot better than endo-ing facefirst into the street at 30 mph.

I don't really hop. I just push off the ground a little bit before the pothole to unweight the wheels on the ground so they go over more smoothly.

Another entry for best topic of the year. Only someone w/ decades of experience would have any idea of what to do here.

Lean forward w/ most of your weight on your hands and ride directly into the pothole.

Are you joking or being serious? Just curious as this seems like the last thing you would want to do, no? I don't really know, but was wondering...

BTW, I would bunny hop over it, unclip in the air, do a superman seat grab, clip back in...by that time, you should have cleared the hole

I don’t do a bunny hop to get over a pot-hole or a grate I just stand, and with a little spring lift the bike slightly, BOTH wheels at the same time while passing over and land on both wheels on the other side. It’s way smoother than a bunny hop and way faster.

I've analyzed all possible reactions and their possible outcomes and have determined that you should bunny hop it.

Then enlighten us. What is the difference between lifting both wheels of the bike off the ground, and a bunny hop?

Both wheels is a bunnyhop like you said.

The only variation is a so called 'bronco' (I hate that name, they are all bunnyhops to me) where you pull up the front first then lift the rear.

Or you can go old school with "Total Unload", saw that in a 1980's biking video once-
