Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

55mm steer tube stack? is it safe?

Hello:

I just purchased a new custom built road bicycle from a well known custom manufacture. I took it down to my local bicycle shop and the owner was alarmed that the bicycle contained a 55mm steer tube stack. He said it should only be a maximum of 40mm. I telephoned the manufacture and they got real defensive and said my bicycle has a 40mm steer tube stack. They called my shop and they told the owner that 55mm is just fine.

Any recommendations? Should I send the bicycle back? Taking it down too much will make the handlebars too low for me. I won't say who the company is just yet as I don't want to defame anyone until I have this issue resolved.

What material will the fork steerer be? If steel or Al you are probably fine...if CF I would stick to under 40mm. Why the heck didn't they just make the head tube longer?

If you got a custom bike it seems to me that you shouldn't have anything near 55mm of spacers.

55 mm???!!! Holy crap! I hope you don't have a carbon steerer; it's bad enuf even with an alloy/AL one. I recently had a bike built semi-custom where the manufacturer built the frame with a longer than normal head tube to minimize the stack height.

A long stack height, as you prolly know, is going to put excess stress on your headset bearings and they will wear out faster than they should.

+1. Are you sure you got a custom bike?
