Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I had to dump the one Campy thing on my bike

I had this really cool, black campy seatpost collar on my bike. It lists a size range that should be acceptable for use on my OCLV, but for some reason, the seat post kept slipping, and I had it much tighter than you'd think it would have to be to hold the seatpost. In fact, the ends of the collar were mashed against each other with no gap, even before it was tight enough to hold the post steady.

So when I was at the LBS ordering my wife's bike, I asked about it, and they gave me a new collar to try out. Of course it was a Bontrager, and of course, it holds perfectly as soon as it gets snug.

It's bizarre how I've built this bike up from parts, yet the more time passes, the more it looks like a stock Trek bike. My Mavic wheels have been replaced by Bontys. My Conti tires have been replaced by Bontys. Now the seatpost collar is Bonty. In fact, the only non-Trek things left on the bike are the seat, seatpost, bar, stem, and pedals. Not counting the Shimano stuff of course. Whatever character the bike had, it's quickly losing it.

If I start talking about buying a Bonty crank, someone please shoot me.

They've got you in their control now.

Next you'll have this strange urge to wear a Malliot Jaune on group rides.

Argh! No more Bontys! I had been biking for three weeks when I decided on a Bontrager Select replacement wheelset for my Bianchi; the stock rims got bent in an accident. Course, I had no clue that I had practically committed a sin against Italian cycling. Now I can only look back and sigh; for the time being I've got no money to upgrade. Maybe I can get myself into another 'accident' and have a good excuse to go up to a pair of Mavics or something.

Theres a dude here in my neighborhood, he rode by the other day, checkingout my Cervelo, hes got a Madone, FULL discovery channel kit, and he goes, "nice bike dude, whered you get the Campy stuff? I thought you could only get those with Shimano?" I said, "I built it..." he looked like he had just eaten cat poop, and rode away...

So am I. The dude weighs like 98 lbs.

Speaking of him, where the heck's he been? Maybe he's still waiting for the snow to thaw up in CT.

well, lets break it down into manageable parts for the operator shall we?

if he was really knowledgable, he may have been referring to the fact that the red frames werent available with campy, only shimano. If he WASNT really knowledgable (more likely) he may have just thought that Cervelo only used Shimano parts, and not considered the fact that they sell frames as well.

As far as his expression when I said I built it, he may have been one of those white glove guys that harrass bike mechanics, and thus found it beneath him to engage in discourse with one who touch their own mechanical devices, or he may just have been surprised that a 3K bike was a DIY event.

in any case, he came across as kind of an odd dude.
