Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Is Cager Aggression Proportional to Rising Fuel Costs?

I would normally post this in the commuting section, but seeing cager aggression affects all Road Cyclists, I thought I post it here.

Todays commute: I'm spinning down Comm.Ave (Boston) at an even steady pace. The skies are clear, the road is slightly damp, all is well. Up ahead I notice another cyclist riding with a Guitar on his back. Not unusual, Berklee College of Music is right down the road. Further up the road is a double parked SUV taking up half-a-lane of a two lane road...a normal commute. Enter the cager, he creeps up behind me assessing the situation. He sees that not only will have to get around us idiot cyclists, but he'll also need get around his fellow Petrol Addict. Solution!? Mash the pedal forcing the engine into full song for 30meters while darting into the left lane. Then, stomp hard brake while swerving back into the right lane for the red light. I ride by him thinking "what a clown".

You would think that with rising fuel costs people would adjust their driving style accordingly. From what I've seen, having to pay higher gas prices has done nothing to slow people down; if anything drivers have become more aggressive. Of course these are the same people who are quick to b!tch and moan about prices being so high. Go Exxon/Mobile...Go Chevron/Texaco!

Do you own a car? Nothing like when the 'ol turbo kicks in and you watch the speedometer rapidly rise.....good stuff.

I sorta agree though....he should've been on a GSX-R600 or something. This way he can get 40 mpg and still click off a 10 1/2 second quarter mile.

Gas prices don't have much to do with driving aggressively. It's the moron in front of you that doesn't know how to drive that is usually the starting point.

I've owned both Turbo and Normally Aspirated vehicles, both modified with aftermarket exhaust systems from head-ports to exhaust tips! I won't even bore you with all the suspension and braking upgrades.

What's with this "cager" stuff? Is name calling a form of aggression?

Most people who frequent the "Commuting" section refere to car drivers as "cagers" seeing the car chassis is cage-like.

Some of us motorcyclists refer to people in cars as "cagers" too.

I've spent a good $8-9k in car mods in the last few years......so yeah, I can relate.

It's always the OTHER moron!
See, someone who understands. As a resident of the state with what I like to refer to as the New England Autobahn, I'm sure you can empathize at times.....particularly since you're probably not too far away from MA or NH either.
