Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How many people have not crashed?

I just started biking, and realize that a crash is bound to come. I was wondering if there is anyone on here that hasn't crashed yet?

Like anyone who hasn't had a crash is going to jinx themselves by admitting it in public? I don't think so.

It's not a matter of if you will crash, it's a matter of when........

i've said this many, many times on here:
20 years and nothing worse than clipless a tip-over in the grass when i got my first look pedals back in the 80's.
i don't think i'm jinxing myself by coming out and saying it, beause i fully expect it to happen one day, and probably sooner than later now that i'm racing every week.

actually, it almost happened sunday morning...

(i'm the one in the black/blue jersey)

for all i know, i'll be the guy on the ground next week!

Why is that guy sleeping in the road?
And why is the guy on the yellow bike kicking him?
What is this, the jinx thread?

haha..
the guy on the ground did one of three things that i didn't see. he either clipped a lane marker while leaned over(it was raining), pushed the front end too hard, or sensed he was going wide and locked his brakes.
the guy who came unclipped was right behind him when he went down and ran smack into the back of his head. when i saw that, i said "oh geez..!"
last thing i heard as i went by was unclipped guy cursing about something.

crash guy was ok. i later saw him walking back to the start/finish with his tacoed rear wheel.

(edit) i have to add that we were all at the front of the chase group(three-man break) with crash guy leading on the last lap when that happened. i led the sprint right up to the line where some guy on a scott CR-1 got me by half a wheel!

5th place.

I'm hoping the crashing I've done over the years on my MTB puts me in good standing on the road. I don't race so the next most risky riding will probably be large group/charity rides. The New Years Day Long Beach-Dana Point ride was the first large group I'd ridden with and it was a blast...no concerns with that group as they all rode past me and left me in the dust!

^^ I'm with you there, MTB and BMX accidents should have made it so that I do not have to crash on the road bike.

And the Long Beach to Dana Point ride was a blast, I got dropped in Laguna and turned around after getting to Dana Point.

Just fell today. Nothing major, but I'm gonna have to check over my bike again tomorrow. More embarrasing than painful really, but then again, it was a very minor (and stupid) crash.

I've fallen while in a stationary position. I'm worried about those crashes while moving... they look messy. Its bound to happen though. I want to fall in glory and learn from it.

I crashed once last year. It's been 2500 miles since and I'm still crash free. (Fingers Crossed)

I'm going to go ahead and tempt fate and say that I've never crashed. One very minor, unwitnessed clipless pedal incident. I've had several close calls, but I was able to recover. I tend to be very cautious, and am not a very agressive rider.

That said, I know it's just a matter of time before I do crash. Just hope it's not too bad...

I haven't crashed since I was about 16 (37 now) but I have had some minor falls. Of course I still use toe clips on all of my bikes (rather loose clips so I can easily get my feet out) but am thinking about going clipless.

I worry more about getting hit on the road than I do about falling.

Nothing like the slow motion view of flying over your handlebars. Just cant remember the landing. Landed on my head and was knocked out. Yes helmets do save lives. *&#$ manhole was overgrown with grass. My MTB was OK. I was 10 miles from home and every little bounce made the ringing in my ears a little more intense for a bit. My neck was jammed and right shoulder hurt like hell for a few weeks. After a week of licking my wounds I got my rear back on the bike. So I'm a proud member of the Over the Handlebar Club. I've been lucky on the road bike. Just an anual didnt get unclipped fast enough stupid thing. Have taking a slide in loose dirt on a corner but never went down all the way. Now that said, I better carry some band aids.
