Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have been in the Cleveland, actually, Akron, Ohio area for almost 2 weeks now. I have been pretty surprised at the number of road bikers that I have seen on the roads, maybe not in Exitland where I am staying. The Sand Run park and the Cuyahoga River NP are in particular had quite a few cyclists in the evenings. So, kudos to akron folks for getting on those bikes.
A very pleasant surprise considering most of my judgement about this area is that it totally f*c*ed up the last election.

Im down here in norton area 1.1 miles from silvercreek metro park (south west from sandrun) We get a fair number here some times.Generaly as you get closer to parks you tend to see more of us out and about. Head down towards the cannal villages and you get a large number of riders both riding the tow path and the roads around the towpath.

If you see a guy on a old cannondale raod bike (white with black bike tube on the top bar used for when i lock the bike up against a pole or what have you) Not so much to protect the paint job as its toast more to protect the aluminum from getting chewed up.That will be me. Click he link in my sig and you can see what else i got on the old thing. Rack on back with trunk and bag in front.

If you see me just say you seen my post on bikeforums. Maybe we can ride up to sand one some weekend from silver creek or down to the tow path (or if you dont mind riding the tow path we can ride the sucker down to masillon.

Sence your newish to this general area i can act as a guide and show you the area that i know pretty well.

Best days for towpath rides are monday to thursday. Not as many on it then and you can cruise at a decent speed. From mid day friday to mid day sunday it can get pretty packed.

I'm originally from that area - lived in an apartment on Akron-Peninsula Rd. years ago. Good to hear people are riding. Stop by Eddy's Bike Shop in Stow if you get a chance, it's a nice, big store. There is also a little bike shop in Peninsula, right next to the bridge, where you can rent bikes to ride the canal path. It's very pleasant.

Try this route, pal. Take Hametown all the way down to where it forks at Galehouse and Bieri, take Bieri over to Black Diamond, Black Diamond down to Back Massillon (Orrville Rd), which you can then take all the way to Lake Rd and Ernies bike shop in Massillon, where you can pick up the towpath back north to Center Rd, then take Fairlane back to Eastern or Hudson Crossing then back over to Silver Creek. Just over a 40 mile loop and a very nice ride.

It's called Century Cycles and where I do most all of my business. Great folks.

Funny, your screen name is the same as a road that cuts across from 303 to 91 - high speed but great big wide shoulders that makes it a joy to ride.

Holy bananas! I am at a hotel right across the street!
I am going back out west as soon as my financing squared away on a dump truck. Which means more money for bike stuff, it is nice to be cruising the net for bike stufff instead of trucks. But I peeked in the window of Eddy's last night after a friendly's veggie burger and ice cream. That should help my jones for the bike.....

Having hit 24 years in Service today, I've lived in many places and recently two years of it was in Cleveland. You can't say much positive about Cleveland, but they do have their bike act down.

The 100-mile Emerald Necklace sets a standard for any city to emulate.

Rock Creek Park was always my favorite Sunday ride.

The Tow Path National Historic site is world class, and they're lucky to have it (I know this crowd isn't into paths, but my family rode our tandem with trailer bike there). Much history.

Best road bikes in Cleveland are found at The Bike Authority in Broadview Heights (South side). https://www.bikeauthority.com/ Talk with Sherman. He's hands on and knows his business. The only shop in town that spoke to me about fitting. They measured me. Used a computer and some other apparatuses. I bought a CAAD 7 from them.

B & K Bike Shop in South Euclid (East side) has been there for several decades. Family run and the owner is always there. Very competent. I bought a Burley Piccolo from them.

Century Cycles has a knowledgeable staff too (many locations around the city). High-end road bikes are not their forte. I bought a Burley tandem from them.

Eddy's is the big shop in the area. At their main store in Stow they have a few associates that know bikes. Most of their hired help know less than I do, and I don't know much.

The area has many organized rides ie the Sweet Corn Ride in July. All through the Amish countryside.

As you can see I tooled up for biking while in Cleveland!

Good review from All American. Eddy's is big and close - but their sales staff sucks.

ChipCom - Regarding Terex Rd., it's named after the former Terex (gigunda earth moving equipment) plant on Rt. 91 - where the fabric store and other shops are located now. I picked Terex for a mtb forum nom de net. Terex is a Latin'ish word for King of the Earth (terra rex).

D-BagWhiz - We were actually the first to occupy one of the apartments back in about '74 - so cool, in the woods, on a hillside. I was in grad school at AU and used to ride to school and up to Peninsula several days a week. Oh, a little more trivia, 3-4 years ago a guy on a high end road bike was hit and killed on the apartment access road. The Leak'in Urinal (Beacon Journal), seemed to be more impressed that his bike cost several thousand dollars than the fact that he was killed by a hit & run. Akron - so many good stories. And if you're looking for a REAL dump truck, Google Image "Terex" and "truck".

And speaking of Bicycle Joneses - I'm speaking.

Pretty well did that last year right near end of the good warm early mornign to 5 or 6 ish. The route i took was slightly diffrent and had some nice rollers. Lots of fun cause i could coast down one and back up the other. Very plesent run.

This year ive already taken a couple beastly hills like portage road in to doleytown (sp? always mess up the spelling on that one). This year its my plan to get my hill legs back. I remember being able to take portage up to my grandmas house non stop. Im planning on doing that run again some time this week.

Ill tell you its quite nice to ride that road drivers dont crowd you at all infact the entire town is nice to ride in. Even during heavy trafic you dont feel like you need to watch over your shoulder constantly. Well heck im sure youve ridden the area you know what its like.

I think thats one of the few things ohio has going for it is its parks system. Ive got somethign around 12 parks with in 20 miles of me. Got sumit metro parks to the north and east of me stark parks to the south. And from what i have heard the parks systems have just purchased a huge new chunk of land that will be as big or bigger than the vally rec area. Got the new but under developed metro park in twinsburge as well. More tow path that will be done this year and the link from center road to snyder av should be done late this year early next. That will just leave a few breaks between zoar and the vally bike and hike/towpath trail up north total of around 7 or 8 missing miles.

Heres a little factoid for you and some of you will remember this if your old enough. The ohio bike web aka the ohio vally bike web aka the ohio vally bike highway

Bits of the uncompleted and cancled can be spoted through out ohio from me to ky and wva. You can see some partial bridges built over hanging off to the left and right of reg highway bridges and what looks like a single lane of high way off to the right of car highways with space between them and the reg highway.

Its a shame this project never made it past some very early construction as it would have made it possible for us to go to any of the states surounding ohio by bike with out fear of cars at all.

I have definitely seen a terex truck. Little bit ibg for the roads, I have driven a truck like that on the road and it is SCARY. it is the whole articulated steering thing....
I am getting a Freightliner. Man tomorrow is a big day....
Ironically, the only other real credit history that I have, other than credit cards, Is the unsecured loan I took out last year for my custom bike!!!!!!
I want to get home to my woman, and to my bike and my mountains. (and start making this money to pay for the truck, and get a custom Mtn Bike and start ebaying for a gigantic new single speed frame, and my first present to myself is going to be road shoes, and pedals)

Death ride? Not hardly - it don't even hit some of the big hills! Those were the roads I road every day before I moved here to Norton a few months ago.
