Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

French Fit

What is up with the French fit? Does anyone ride this way? Apparently it is better on your back and neck. I am worried about the clearance though in the event of a crash. It seems that riders of this style choose larger bikes and don't worry about standover clearance.

Well my Lemond Reno is 55cm and for me is too big, but in reality is probably a French Fit. The larger frame has a longer head-tube so the saddle to bar drop ideally is less. If we're talking Sloping Geometry then clearance isn't an issue unless you're talking 2, 3 sizes bigger. I didn't choose this fit I was mis-sized, my new frame is more an Eddy Fit.

Why don't you like the French fit? I dont want to buy a frame and realize later that I need a different fit. I am trying to avoid buying a beater and riding it for a while before getting a decent ride. I was hoping to just jump straight in and be done with it for the next 5 years or so.

I thought French Fit was what you threw when a foreign rider keeps winning the TDF..

It's a somewhat upright position so getting your upper body out of the air might be a challenge. I also feel like the taller position gives me less control around corners. With longer frames come longer top-tubes so a shorter stem may be needed to compensate, of course if a stem too short it may make the steering twitchy. French Fit is the least popular fit for a reason IMO.
