Crash! (With Pics, a little gore)

    Hi all!

Sorry I haven't been around this week. Last Sunday (4-30-06) I was on a training ride with a group and passed out after the last sprint. The bad news is I passed out while still going 25 mph or so (ouch). The good news is I'm okay and just have a few stitches. I did crack my helmet in 4 places (that is why we wear them). The really bad news is I miss my next two races, doc's orders. Attached are pics of me bandaged up as well as when we took the bandages off. Cheers all!

Yep, looks like 'Crashfest 2006' is still alive and well. Heal quick & make sure that passing out while riding doesn't become a bad habit.

Damn dude.....glad to hear you're ok. I just crashed yesterday going only 2 mph slower, and the ONLY roadrash I have is a little on my right elbow, and some patches on my back (very minor at that). Looks like I got off easy, although I did whack my head pretty good. Didn't come close to breaking my helmet though.

I still can't figure out how I didn't get any rash on the lower part of my body.

You should still prolly replace it. The foam isn't designed to take multiple impacts.

Back to the OP - ouch. Did the doc have any insight regarding your passing out?

That leg pic is the reason I shave my legs. I know I'm gonna get a shiner like that sooner or later. Hopefully it's not from (ahem) PASSING OUT WHILE RIDING, though. OMFG that is crazy--but at least you were relaxed when you hit the ground!!

Wow. One of my cycling coaches just got in a head injury wreck when finishing a race. I'll be wearing my helmet in honor of him at _ALL_ times. (have a 1/2 mile commute to school) I hope everyone else learns from people's mistakes. Good luck in healing!

It's easy for you to say "Didn't come close to braking my helmet though". But a hundred of mine to one of yours says there is damage to your helmet that you can't see. It's not worth taking a risk in your next head banging crash. Take it from someone that thought the same thing 15 yrs ago and crashed again and then saw the aged damage from the earlier crash when it was all broken apart from the second crash. Get yourself a new helmet immediately. It may save your life.

    Hello again!

The bike is fine, it faired far better than I did. The break leavers are scrached and gouched up, but that is minor really. It is runing fine and I hope to be out on it this week.

This has happened to me twice before, once 12 years ago and once 6 years ago. I've been checked out by the doc before (and they are doing tests again). Basically what seems to happen is that my blood pressure drops faster than my veins can constrict after the effort. With no pressure to pump the blood, I don't get blood to my head and I pass out.

Thanks for all the well wishes and I'll keep you posted on what the doc says. Cheers!

    Scott
