Hub problem w/ Zonda wheels...please help!

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hub problem w/ Zonda wheels...please help!

Hey folks,

I am riding a virtually brand new set of '05 Zonda wheels. Soon after riding them, I started to notice a rubbing noise coming from the front wheel. At first I thought it was a brake pad rubbing, but after eliminating that as a possibility, I realized the hum was coming from the hub.

Being a newbie, I'm not sure if what I'm hearing when I ride is just the hard tires on the asphalt, or if it's coming from the hub. But when I get off the bike, holding the fork in the air and spinning the tire, or even removing the wheel and spinning it in my hands, I can still hear it so I know it's coming from the hub. This doesn't appear to be affecting the hub's performance, though, as the wheel rolls well, and is even frictionless enough to rock back and forth for a little while just from the weight of the valve and the magnet.

My LBS, which I consider to be the most respectable one around, has been no help whatsoever, only looking and riding and telling me that the hub is perfect and that it's standard for Campagnolo hubs to hum like that and I shouldn't be able to hear it while riding (which you can't unless it's calm out or a tail wind and there are no cars around).

What it comes down to is simply the fact that I hear a noise when I spin the hub, while other bikes, with better or worse hubs, are silent. Am I just being overly picky because this is new and expensive? Could you go lift the fork on your bike, spin the wheel in your hand, and tell me if the hub makes a very noticable hum? Has anyone encountered this sort of problem before and does it have a fix I could handle myself? Thanks!

Ugh...no replies? I don't think this is a Zonda specific problem, it's more just a hub problem...and I imagine the Campy Record-like hubs in the Zonda wheels are pretty standard..

Your post is in the wrong forum. you shoulds be posting in the bike mechanics forum.
This problem will likely just go away when you break the wheels in.
If there is no drag, there really is not a problem.
