Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bontrager select stem from trek 1500

I feel like i need a shorter stem, but here is my problem.

I want to order it so it's at my house when i get home from school at the end of the week...but my bike is at home, so i cant measure how long it is so i have no idea what a shorter stem actually is.

Does anyone know what trek puts on their bikes?

As you can see they have a handful of different lengths...

It all depends on the size frame of your bike. Different size bikes will have different size stems, handlebars, crank arms, etc.

Could you tell us your frame size?

Keep in mind, two bikes of the same frame size may have different sized components also, so this is only a starting point. The best method is to measure it yourself, but that is difficult given your current situation. If you want the best result, you may have to wait to get an accurate measurement.

Yes, I would measure it. My 2005 Lemond Reno came with a 100mm stem, but the Lemond website lists the 2006 55cm as having a 110mm, so you never really know. If you knew the year, you could maybe look up what the stock stem was, but I still think you'd be better off measuring. Some shops will swap stems out for the customer when selling a bike. So if the bike they want has a 100mm on it, but they need say a 120mm, the shop may take a 120mm off of another bike, put it on the bike being sold, and put the 100mm on the other bike.

Why don't you ask someone at your house to check the length for you? My Bontrager Select has the length and rise stamped near the steerer tube bolts.

I just got an '07 1500. It came with a 100mm stem. I rode it for a month (~400 miles) and decided I wanted a longer stem so I went back to the trek store and got refitted on the trainer. tried a couple different length/rise combinations and ended up with a 110 with no rise. The new stem is actually a Bontrager Race stem which I guess is a slight upgrade. The whole procedure took around 45 min and they did it for free. Talk about a good bike shop.

Mine's a 54 and it's got a 100mm 7 degree rise stem on it. But like someone said earlier, shops do change stems out quite frequently, so you really don't know for sure unless you measure yours or it's stamped on the stem.
