Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Which trip computer do you all use?

I'm looking for something as basic/inexpensive as possible, what should I get?

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Walmart has a Bell Computer for $8.62! It's CHEAP, but it works and if it gets trashed, who cares. Wally World isn't totally whacked when it comes to cycling. I wouldn't buy a bike from them, but the cheap computer if I couldn't or didn't want to afford better? Why not!

I like my Ciclosport CM-434. Sure, it cost $150, but it's neato. However, I'd probably get the VDO MC1.0 if I had to do it all over again.

However, for price and reliability, you can't really beat the Cateye Astrale 8. I've had an Astrale on my '93 Trek 2100 since I bought it (back in '93), and it still works like a champ 13 years later.

Cateye Cordless 7. At $40 it's not the least expensive one out there, but it is wireless and has a good set of features.

I have a Polar CS100 with heartrate and cadence. It is all wireless and works well. The chest strap has started causing me trouble though.

Paid $10 for a schwinn computer at wal-mart. Has an odometer, trip distance, avg distance, max speed, a clock, and trip timer. It's held up for over 800 miles so far.

cateye wireless mc100w

Cateye wireless mc100w is what I use.

The Sigma BC1606L is also very good

The best trip computer would probably be a Garmin or top range polar model for around $500us mark, as they can do temperature and altitude giving a course gradient etc..

Cheap and bombproof computer with nice features: Planet Bike Protege' 9.0 It's the computer I put on my commuter over the winter and is often on sale for about $30. Cateye and Sigma both make a full line of good computers as well. Some quite affordable.

I had one of those as well. It held up for right about 800 miles. When it broke I bought a Planet Bike. I have one on both by bikes. The Protege 5 on my rain bike has over 1500 miles on it and cost about $20. The Protege 9 has more functions and is worth the $10 extra.

Yup, I have a Planet Bike Protege 9 on all my bikes. They work, rain or shine.

The walmart schwinn one is pretty good ~$10. The only reason I got the Cateye Astrale 8 ($26 with the 10% off) to replace it is because I needed the cadance. I would prefer wired, unless they came out with a coded wireless that was actually affordable!

Cateye Microwireless. Backlight sucks, other than that it's good.

Cateye Astrale 8 here too. Cheap and has cadence on top of all the basic functions.

I've been using the same Cateye Tomo for AGES, and I've gathered several 'model G' wiring kits over the years, so I can use the same computer on all my bikes. This obviously means my annual odometer reading doesn't get stuffed up

I got a backlit sigma for around $25, odo still has a lot of zero's in front of it though, try to change that this summer. Came with cadence but I haven't installed it yet...1600 series I believe...

Actually (at least according to my colleague from down south), "y'all" is singular, and "all y'all" refers to a group.

sigma sport bc500 and/or bc800 for $9 and $12... wireless unit is $18... rear wheel harness is $8... all computers come w/wired harness... extra magnet is $3 (expensive, IMHO)... these have worked well for me... (one feature i like is that if you change a battery, you can reset the odometer to your documented mileage - no starting over at zero)...
