Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

VDO setup... no speed (wireless)

I bought a couple of new VDOs on ebay from a reputable dealer. Just spent ten minutes trying to set them both up on two road bikes and I've not been able to get either to register speed. One is a C3DS and the other is a MC1.0+. I installed the batteries, set the wheel size and on the C3DS hit the transmition reset. The transmitter is showing a green light when the wheel mag passes. I looked at the trouble shooting guide and have checked all of that. What am I doing wrong. Both of these computers can't be bad and the seller's feedback shows no indication of others having to return VDOs. I've pulled the batteries for five minutes and so on. I must be missing something. The only thing I haven't done is attach the units to the handlebars but have had them in their mounts.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Have you gone through the process of programming the entire setup with proper time, wheel size, altitude, body weight, etc? If I recall, they may require you to complete the programming prodeure before they work right. I have a Ciclo CM414 alti, and it was kind of finicky until it was properly reset and programmed from the very beginning.

I'll check that but I know I set the time and wheel size on the C3DS and it doesn't have an altimeter or ask for body weight. I'd spend a little more time looking at this but I've gotta be out the door in a couple of hours and need to pack. Hoping someone has had this happen relay the cure, then I'll be able to fix these right before hitting the road. Gotta love last minute changes to "the plan".

Thanks!

Buy some fresh batteries. If I have one complaint about my VDO is that it is very sensitive to having a good battery - it tends to stop working as soon as a battery (either one) starts to fade. And I have bought new computers that came with weak batteries.

Thanks Jeromy!

I needed a new viewpoint because I'd done and done over every detail. The manual is kinda weak too, not showing me how the transmitter for the MC1.0+ is supposed to be installed. I don't know if I have it upside down and backwards or what. Here's a shot of my Bike Friday: The other is on my road race bike.

I'm 90% sure I've got the transmitter on the C3DS installed right and all this doesn't really matter because neither computer reads mph when I spin the wheel and move them around in different positions.

I'll pick up some new batteries as the last resort.

Cheers,

My VDO installation was a nightmare. It still acts finicky when the temp. is cold. But after changing batteries and re-calibrating etc. what finally got it to work was moving the sending unit up the fork as high as possible so that the distance between the sending unit and receiving unit is as short as possible.

The sender for the MC1.0 is somewhat different than mine (I have the C15+), but it looks like you have it on backwards; I think you want the magnet to sweep past the black part which is now pointing to the outside of your fork. What Bobby Lex says is also true - the range of the transimitter is limited. Good luck.

Just to close this out....

I started with that transmitter turned around the opposite way and just about every other setup I could think of. Didn't matter.

I'm back in town now and the batt change got the MC1.0+ going but new batteries couldn't bring the C3DS to life. The dealer is sending me another C3DS and I asked him to check it before dropping it in the mail. I'm sick of messing with them for now! I've gone through every possible fix at least three or four times including two new sets of batteries and having the head unit mounted only 17" from the transmitter. This is my first venture into wireless bike computers and possibly my last. I like the functions and menus of the VDOs though.

Thanks!
