Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ride with a hangover?

I've never done it before but am contemplating it tomorrow after a night on the town. Just curious how many people have done so and how they coped. My ride is 60 miles tomorrow.

60 miles and a hangover? Those may be some of the longest miles you ever ride.

it depends upon how hungover you are and 'prolly your age and how much water & calories you consume before going to bed. I'm sure it can be done. A flat 60 would likely be a tad easier than 60 w/ 10K of climbing so you could just sit in.

Its really not that bad. Drink a bunch before you head out and bring enough water. Actually, some of my fastest rides have been hungover. Its a great way to get rid of a hangover too, by the end of the ride you'll feel great.

I think you are underestimating how much young people drink. You don't want to see what you ate for the last couple of days....do you?

make sure you drink several large glasses of water before bed the night you go out.

You'll feel better riding distances easy than you would laying in bed or on the couch. Go for it

I've done a number of rides in the 50-100 mile range with a hangover(college days were rough), its reall not that big of deal. Drink lots of water and mountain dew. Bigger problem is the lack of sleep that a night on the town causes

Do you really have to get drunk? Sounds like cycling is important to you or you wouldn't want to do it after the night out. So why not just take it easy tonight and be able to be the mildly buzzed cyclist, different from the average Joe out on the town, because you are a dedicated cyclist.

As a college student, I've done it a few times. Only once, after a pretty serious boozefest, did anything bad happen. I was doing a 25 miler with some killer hills....about 20 miles into it, I came to a stop at an intersection and forgot to unclip. It was a total slow motion fall, I was sloooowwwly tipping over and frantically trying to get my foot out but couldnt and plop. A car pulled up behind me laughing. I probably looked ridiculous.

But yeah, as long as you've sobered up a bit, it kills the hangover nice.

post bachelor party rides are great. Only rule is you can't attack unless you drank more and stayed out later than everyone you attack. it is it's own little form of puragatory.

Disagree, the best ride i've ever had (distance/time) was after a very harsh night in Madison...

Just make sure you got enough water in ya.

Get enough water in you, don't eat anything heavy beforehand (maybe a cup of oatmeal) and you should be fine. And the dehydration makes you lighter!!

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

I rode with a hangover once and in the process lost the Milk Duds™ I ate at snacktime in Kindergarten!

Actually, that's one of the biggest reasons I started riding bicycles, because it was a great way to get rid of a hangover. You won't be at your best, but you'll have tons of calories in you from the alcohol, just waiting to be burned. You might even feel great, depending on what kind of hangover you have going on. If you manage to get some good sleep, but are still a little buzzed when you get up, those first few miles might be a blast.

I've done it a few times on early morning training rides. The worst part is getting out of bed and past the first 10-20 miles. After that you actually feel pretty good. Hydrate yourself like hell, of course.

Some of my best rides last fall occured when I was hung over, or maybe even a little tipsy still. No real group rides this year, but will be starting up again this summer. Friend of mine won his first Cat 1/2 race, as a brand new 2, hungover as hell.

My advice: get a lot of water in you, both before you go to bed and before you ride, and you'll be fine.

define "hangover"!

I don't think I want to ride after drinking 1 bottle of Don Julio and only 5 hours of sleep. But I sure will ride after 2 6-pack and couple hours of sleep.

Woah, woah, woah...this needs to be established now...there is nothing wrong with being the trashed dedicated cyclist as well. I know some of you have been in that club at some time. My suggestion is to drink as much as you usually would, come home eat something of substance, drink 2-3 glasses of water within an hour of going to sleep. Try to wake up 90minutes before the ride and have another couple glasses of water and a solid wholesome breakfast. Hangovers are only for those who cannot fight them...nothing some water, vitamin E, and a good wholesome meal can't solve. I do not suggest drinking before a race...I never would, but drinking before a ride the next day?...I've done it many a time. I've done it before practice races, long rides, etc. I haven't noticed much of a difference...

Oh stop already. I used to do this all the time. Did brutal competitive rides with a hangover more times than I can count. Never killed me. Blew out my hangover most of the time actually. Was it harder riding with a hangover? Of course. Did it kill me? No.

Then I quit drinking all together. Duh. If I was doing hard bike rides with a hangover it eventually occurred to me that I had failed the drinking test. I've been sober 10+ years. You guys can have a beer for me.

My advice: try it and get back to us on this. Let us know how it works for you. You can make your own decision about how smart it was.
