Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Knee Pain Found! Back Pain Lost.

My ride yesterday had me moving in opposition to a steady, mist filled easterly wind from start to finish over 62 hilly miles (North Shore LI). Not perfect conditions, but as always, in the end, gratifying.

Anyway...I took the train back. Part of the trip home was devoted to thinking with satisfaction how properly fitted my bike is after so much trial and error, as I felt so fresh. I live about a mile and a half from the station. When I got to the street I opted not to put on my cleats and rode home with my sneakers (for a long time, I never used cleats at all) that measly 1 1/2 Mi ride, over extended as I was gave me two pains at the back of my two kneecaps where there had been none at all.

I don't have chronic knee problems, what do I do with these knees as they are to avoid developing permanent injury?

Meanwhile I seemed to discover the solution to my life long lower back problem that has always developed when in a more or less fixed position over a long period of time - happens even driving a car for a long distance. The solution for me is to relax! I've always tried to fix myself in what I felt to be the proper posture(s) thereby causing more tension and aching. Instead I loosened up, allowed my back to respond naturally to my pedaling motion- my technique having gotten far better with the implementation of clipless.
