Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano SPD-SL 105 R-540 Pedals

I bought these at the fabulous $38 price at probikekit, and tried them out the first time today with the yellow cleats. Bejesus, there was so much lateral, and vertical float! Do people actually LIKE this much float? There was so much movement vertically, that I would get clackedy sounds each upstroke. Is this normal, or did I get a bad pedal?

At least the sqeaks my old Look pedals gave me are gone

Something's definitely not right there. I get zero vertical movement and only a few degrees or so lateral.

I third that notion. Mine have no vertical movement.

Hi sometimes the cleat bolts supplied are slightly too long for the shoe mounting points, which means that when they are done up as tight as possible the cleats are still loose. As "Odin" said there should be zero vertical movement and 5 degrees of lateral.

Also is there a "body cover" in place see the attached picture

Okay, I figured out the problem: I am a dingbat. I was using the LOOK adapters for the Time shoes, which didn't conform exactly to the shape of the cleats, and so when everything was tightened down by the bolts, the cleats were being slightly deformed to take the shape of the adapters. Oh well, time to buy new Shimano adapters, I guess...
