Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anyone here wear skinsuits?

I've been considering one to add to my cycling aparrel. Just to use on my normal 35 mile ride. Do any of you use one when not in a TT?

So, your answering my question with a yes, agreeing that you wear one and refering to yourself as a poser. Am i correct?

i'm sure operator was in jest. i don't see why you shouldn't wear a skin suit whenever the idea suited you.

Ignore the poseur police... it's just a one piece kit.

I tried one on once, it made me feel fast just standing there.

I have a friend who rides in one all the time - it’s his favorite kit.

I am not really interested or think i have a need for one . But,I do wonder , are they more comfortable than bibs or shorts. I would think there would be no restrictions about one's stomach and breathing must be easier. So, why are they mean't to be used for time trials.

Fewer seams; more aerodynamic.

I'm modeling one for my wife's ebay ad now. I made her cut out my face.

I can't wear them because of the lack of pockets. And I wouldn't want to be wearing one while using a porta-potti.

Yes for time trials or perhaps when I KNOW that I am going to be attacking and getting into a long solo breakaway.

They're great for crits. And you don't need pockets in a crit.

Plus, they are faster. And at the Pro-1-2 level, you're looking for every ounce of speed you can find.

But to just wear one around town is probably a poseur move.

And you CAN get out of them pretty easily to use the "port-a-loo". They're not straight-jackets.

I wore them only for racing, and even then only in the following:
- Velodrome
- Time Trials
- Criteriums

The reasons why I wouldn't bother for recreational riding:
- Have to get half undressed to take a leak
- No pockets to carry energy bars/tubes/whatever

If you don't mind stripping to pee and don't carry anything in your pocket, I don't see a problem with you wearing one, but I also don't see a need for one. You might like the lack of anything flapping around in the wind, though.

That almost defeats the purpose. Pockets will catch the air, so it's no longer aero. You still have to take it half way off to take a leak. The only benefit I see with the pocketed one is it probably still flaps around less.

No comments tho as to are they the most comfortable kit you have expereinced. As to looks. I really don't see the diffenence. Most jerseys are skin tight at the bottom hem.
The thing with bibs, I do feel the double layers makes one a little warmer. Would a skin suit be more comfortable and cooler.

I bought one cheap to use with another jersey over the top in cool weather, but did do a couple of rides in it on its own last summer to see if it made a difference. It was probably the most comfy piece of kit I've worn, maybe because I'm tall and bib shoulder straps are quite tight on me. It also seemed to give me a few mph more down the fastest hill (about 55 compared to normal 51-2). But I wouldn't wear one normally, mainly for the pockets reason.

I wear them as base layers in cool/cold weather. It's great to eliminate an extra waistband or another pair of bib straps when you're already wearing several layers. It seems that most don't have back pockets, but I have ones that do. In fact, one is a zippered pocket, so it won't hurt your aero advantage.

I have three sleeveless skinsuits made by DeSoto Sport. I love them for everyday rides if the weather is warm enough. They're tri-suits so the padding is thin, but I like that. There is no waist band to dig in, nothing flaps around and they look great on my svelte body.

They won't let you wear sleeveless for racing - ostensibly because the sleeves protect your shoulders (?) so I revert to a regular kit for that, or wear a tight under armor tshirt undernethe.

The suits I own have one pocket, but DeSoto also makes them with more (5 I think).

I like 'em. I wear 'em. I don't care what anyone thinks - I'm Scottish after all ;-)
