Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah, I've got a 60cm Navigator that I built myself. Since the Navigator was intended as a really heavy-duty touring model, all the tubes are oversize. That makes for good durability, but a seriously rough ride. I compensate by running 37c tires which provide some cushioning. The Navigator frame also has the oddest threads for rack mounts that I've ever seen - they aren't 4 or 5 mm, nor are they SAE. I don't know what the threads are, but I'm planning on going to the industrial fastner shop in my city to let them diagnose it.

The frame is everything it is supposed to be. I don't know the angles, but the bike is stable in a straight line without the twitchy steering typical of most road bikes. The parts (other than the thread issue mentioned above) take standard headsets, seatposts, derailleurs, etc. Everything is well finished, well put together, and looks fine. The price was right.

Overall, I'm a happy Klein customer. I know you probably wanted feedback on the Klein road-racing frames, and I can't help you there, but I've posted what I know. If the road-racing frames are as well done as the Navigator touring frame, then I'd expect them to be great.

I have a Klein.. ROde a Cannondale aluminum frame. Found it stiff and took bumps badly. Don't feel so about my Klein. Riding is believing.

Love my Reve X.

Comfort, responsiveness, acceleration....it's all there.

I, and from what I have read others as well, have had some initial creeking noise issues....bottom bracket and the suspension piece in the seat post. But those were dealt with and other than that it has been flawless.

I have a Klein qCarbon Race which is basically the same as the Aura frame and it is a great frame and they finish the frames beautifully. They are very nice bikes.

I love my Klein Aura. Have put close to 5,000 miles on it and it is still a kick in the arse to ride.

I love my Klein Quantum Pro (2000). It's light and stiff. Klein uses the best frame paint I have ever seen. It just doesn't chip or scratch. Tough stuff. The internal cable routing is the greatest. I can't say enough about it.

I have two Kleins. One 1996 Quantum II that has over 30,000 miles on it and a new Quantum Q-Pro XV. The original Klein is amazing. It is a BT (before Trek) model. It sprints, climbs and turns with anything out there. I've had it at 55 MPH many times and it's stable and has no handling problems. Turns quickly and is no hands stable as far as you want to go. At 225#, it climbs and there is no chain rubbing uphill in any gear. Also has the internal bearings that need no adjustment and seem to last forever. I love it so much, I bought the Q-Pro 6 months ago. It is the Trek built model. The handing is more stable than my original, but rides so much nicer with carbon forks and stays. The older has aluminum forks and stays. There is a definate difference. I'd choose the older Klein for climbing and descending mountains (Mt. Diablo) but the newer one for longer century rides. Don't get me wrong, I rode the older one on dozens of centuries with no problems and didn't know the difference until I rode the newer one for a while and compared back to back. I have a couple of friends who now ride Kleins after riding Lemond or Trek and they now want to sell their old bikes!

Bottom line: Ride one or several and see for yourself. The paint is also the best in the business. I always get many good comments on rides from riders that love the fades and high quality. I prefer it over a bunch of stickers. Good luck shopping for your new Klein!!

I purchased a KLein Reve XX last yr and am very happy with it. It is a perfect long distance bike with the carbon fork/seatstays/ and "softail" insert, but also fast and light (<17lbs w pedals) for great accel and handling. All Dura-Ace except for calipers, and wheels <1500 g. The paint job, "havana citrus" is the best I've seen and the welds are a thing of beauty. Maybe not the choice of hard core racers, but perfect for me.

I have a friend who has an '02 Quantum. It's really nice, and I can only come up with one complaint:

What is up with the rear dropouts? You HAVE to touch the chain to get the wheel off. Goofiest thing I've ever seen. I can see it being a faster wheelchange in a race -- maybe -- and the mechanic will need some GoJo when he's done.

Other than that, it's a really nice frame. Great color, workmanship, everything.

Probably the best input of all so far. I'll add they are not super stiff (which is not good for racing) but comfortable (good for long rides like centuries), have the best paint job of any mass builder, and have that quirky rear dropout.
