Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Memorial Day Metric Near DC?

Does anyone know of a metric century event going on reasonably close to the DC area over Memorial Day weekend? I've Googled, but not really found much of anything. As the advertising for these kind of events tends to be spotty, though, I figured I'd ask around...

The Memorial Day Metric
Potomac Pedlars. AA to B levels
Starts at Southern High School near Annapolis
https://www.bikepptc.org/ride_schedul....html#May27Sat

PPTC has several other metric lenght rides going on that weekend.

Oxon Hill club has metrics on both Saturday and Monday.
https://ohbike.org/rides/200605.html#27

added - PPTC "Express Train to Chesapeake" looks like it might be fun. Saturday out of Southern High.
If it's the route I think it is, those are some nice riding roads.

I don't know of any organized rides, but if the wife and I do something, it'll probably be around 60 miles. It you're interested in joining us, I'll drop you a PM once plans get finalized.

Upper Mont Co, and you're more than welcome to join us. The route has some moderate climbs (10-12% grade) but they're short. We usually pull around a 14-15mph average for the 60.

Plus, it'll give you an excuse to stop by our LBS and try on some shoes

Cydewaze, I'm interested in this too; sounds like fun. I wasn't going to attempt it at first. What you describe as your pace may not seem like much to you, but it's pushing the upper limit for some of us outta shape folks(i.e., ME). But I figured, if I can't hang, I know the area, so I'd simply turn around and head back

Where were you planning on meeting? Around All American Cycles? I've been meaning to check that place out for some time, so this would be a good 'excuse' to do so. Hope they're open.

No need for that. We ride as a group, and if people hang back, we stop periodically to regroup. No one gets left behind.

Actually I have an uber-secret meeting place. Once we decide when we're riding, I'll PM everyone for specifics.

So far Kuma wants to ride on Monday (being it a holiday). How about everyone else? What day is good for you?

I'll be doing the same ride as Cydewaze (and his lovely wife) but probably on Sat or Sunday. I'm having some surgery on Tuesday and I can't eat anything on Monday - just water. No big rides, no BBQ - what a crime. If there's a group for Sat. or Sunday, let me know!

it looks more like i will be around this weekend. dont know for sure though. What time are you thinking of going out regardless of the day? Earlier would be better for me but its not a killer or anything.

I'm up for any of the three days. Why doesn't everyone list when they'd like to ride, and which route.

Possible days are: Sat, Sun, Mon.
Routes are: 45mi, 60mi

bobby_c has a modified version of the 45 that stretches it to 49 and adds a water stop halfway.

I know Kuma wanted to ride on Monday, and I wouldn't mind riding more than one day, but I don't think mrs. cyde would want to do the 60mi route twice. Perhaps we could do one ride on Sat or Sun and make it the 45, and then the 60 with Kuma on Mon?

Who's interested in what route and what day?

Tried to post this earlier, but something must have happend...

Anyways, I'm down for monday, but if the shorter ride happens on the weekend, I'll try and make that, and see how I feel about riding a second day too. FWIW, anybody hear anything about how the weather is supposed to hold? I hear monday is supposed to be nice.

Any day could be good for me. It just depends on the time. The earlier the better. Any route it good for me as well. Id like to go earlier simply because my wife wants to go riding later in the afternoon so I would like to still have time for that. If you are riding two seperate days I should easily be able to make it to one of them.

Interested, but not able this weekend.

Headed for Baltimore Saturday, but may try to make it to Bike Jam for the afternoon races.
Sunday is North Central Trail. End to end and back if I can manage 80 miles on gravel.
Monday is another work day.

We're up for Sat. or Sunday. Probably the 45 or 48 mile ride. Our average is more like 14 mph, with my wife slowing down the last 5 miles or so.

I'm thinking maybe do the shorter route on Sat, kick back on Sun, and do the 60 on Mon.

I'll see how the wife feels about riding both days.

Here's what I think:

Cydewaze has probably forgotten, but we are going to be out very late on Friday night/Saturday wee hours, so if we are riding on Saturday, I'd prefer to ride in the afternoon. Cydewaze may be able to do 14-15 mph average on the 60 miler, but I certainly can't. My average for that ride is in the high 12s, because there are quite a number of hills and although they may be short, there are plenty of them so the 60 miler is a tiring ride...for me anyway. Maybe it will be a different story when I get my new bike. I do much better on the 45 miler, where I average somewhere in the mid 14s.

Anyway, other than not getting up early on Saturday, I am game for anything (except cyde is right, I will NOT do two 60 milers!!! I have a hard time wrapping my head around 1 60 and 1 45!)

As Cyde mentioned, the 60 miler on Monday morning would be best for me, the earlier the better. My wife's got my weekend planned out otherwise with a camping trip and assorted "honey-dos." If the group wants to go on another schedule, though, that's ok -- I'll just listen to the war stories and join up next time!

Doh! I keep forgetting about that Friday night gig.

So I guess early Sat is out for me. I do have a cue sheet for the ride though, although I need to update it to reflect route changes.

So for me and mrs cyde it's going to be either late Sat, or anytime Sun or Mon.
