Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garmin 301

About to snag one off ebay. Just wondering does this unit have navigation capabilities like a normal GPS unit? I didn't say anything about navigation functions or any screenshots that showed them on any website that I found.

It has navigation but you can't upload regular maps to it, i.e. all you get is a little arrow tracing a path on an otherwise blank screen. You can mark waypoints and the like and you get direction but that's it, IME. I think there's a features called "Courses" where you can upload a previous ride in order to follow, well, the "course".

Actually, you cannot even input any GPS-coordinates by hand. You cycle and you can see where you have been. You cannot use it as a navigation tool, unless you have cycled the same route before. The Edge is more like a training device. I just bought the Garmin GPSMAP60CSx last week, because what I wanted was a navigation tool primarily. I bought the topographical map of The Netherlands (1:50.000), which even has most of the dirt paths. I will never be lost again!

I've been using the 301 for about a year; it's not for nav as others have said. I like the fact that I can move it from bike to bike; I like the speed, distance, HR features, but the HR is its weakest point as you will see on other forums. It drives you nuts as for no apparent reason it stops working, then starts up again. I thought I had solved the problem by using bu-bump(?) conductivity cream on the transmitter and it is greatly improved using this but this morning on a 28 mile ride it was on-off-on all the time - infuriating!
