Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road Tire Sizing Question

I am new to cycling and I just ripped apart my rear tire. I was wondering what size tire is best for mostly recreational, but competitive cycling? My current rear tire was 25mm.
Thanks a lot.

Recreational but competitive? That's an oxymoron.
25's are fine.

How much do you weigh? What are your road conditions?

The tire needs to be matched to its rim and to the bike. If the bike left the factory with a 25mm tire, that means the rim is designed to handle tires with an actual, measured width of between about 21mm and 28mm, which includes most tires with an advertised width between 23mm and 28mm.

In general, a wider tire provides a larger air cushion, better absorption of road shock, more stability, and fewer flats. Most folks riding for fitness, recreation, or riding to work or school would benefit from riding on a 28mm tire (assuming your frame and fork provide sufficient clearance).

Pro cyclists typically use a narrower size, as those sizes are a lighter than a wider tire, and for a pro, saving an ounce or two may be important.
