Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Ah, how did you get that lucky? When I rolled into that rest stop, they were gone. I heard more were on the way, but I sure didn't want to wait for 'em. I did get one the previous year when I rode the metric.

I'll be signing up for Cool Breeze again. I felt great when I finished the Century last year. My wife and 11 year old (well, guess she was 10 then) were waiting with my in-laws at the end with a hand lettered sign for me! Then I ate like crazy! It's a fun ride. Have to remember to sign up early 'cause they do sell that one out.

Hmm.....looking at the route profiles, I think I'm going to sign up for the relatively flat century ride.....it's perfect for my fixed gear bike.

It is relatively flat. There is a short climb just as you come into Montecito, then a few longer ones after the 2nd rest stop. I'm no speed demon and wasn't pushing hard at all and even I finished in 6:30 (butt time).

Warning! They had a huge lunch spread mid-way through...lots of food and tables and I had to struggle to avoid chowing down and taking a nap! There I was working my Sustained Energy drink for hours and suddenly faced with a buffet! I passed on most of it but made up at the excellent meal they provided at the finish!

the lunch sandwiches were great! but took me longer to eat then i normally like to spend at a rest stop!

they REALLY need to get that hill out of there at the 100ish mile mark for the double metric! i HATE that hill! it's STEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!

i can't remember if you ride lower on PCH or if i'm confusing cool breeze with the grand tour!

but again... cool breeze is a GREAT GREAT ride! you should do it if you are available that saturday!

So you see more coast on the Grand Tour? I'm leaning against doing Grand Tour since I'm turning 27--not 124!!--that day. But if it's such a great ride, maybe I'll do it.

Hi,

Cool Breeze has become a fixture on my calendar. I've done it the last 5 or 6 years in a row. About thirty of my clubmates show up and we typically have a group of 10-15 that stay together throughout the ride. It's flat enough that yuou can ride it fairly fast but I always opt for the group that's riding a moderate pace.
