Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Death Ride in the heat

Today I learned a valuable lessen. Don't ride when its over 100...much less 110.

I procrastinated half the day off, so I didn't start my ride till noon. I rode about 35 miles and by about mile 20 I just wanted it to end.

At first I was hammering pretty good then I started to go low on water. I went near a park, but I opted to keep going after seeing 2 kids with pit bulls and no leashes on them. The pits had spiked collars and the owners dress (cholo types) showed they were probably pretty mean dogs, so I kept going.

I ran out of water at about mile 16 but found a fountain not too far past that. I went a little bit further then turned around at the end of the trail.

On the ride back I was pretty much going at a pace not to dehydrate. I bought a gatorade at mile 30 but It didn't help much...at mile 32 I stopped sweating, a precursor to dehydration.

It was probably between 100 to 110 during the ride. I seriously doubt I will ever go over 10 miles in that kind of heat.

When you stop sweating even when it is still very hot out - I think that's a sign that you could end up with heat exhaustion/heat stroke. Not good! - I think that is way beyond dehydration...

actually the key is to have enough water! i ride all summer along in 100+ up to 120's! i ride after work... and it's hot at 4:30! but you do need to have plenty of water or someplace to get water (not so easy to find water spots here in the desert!) i set out on a ride today and it was over 100 when i got home.... but i went further than i planned... (ended up riding 55.6 miles 4226 feet od climbing) and ran out of water.. fortunately the park ranger at the entrance kisosk had some!

get a camelback!!!! )

I think I still need to acclimate to it, when I was in Kuwait I'd wear a jacket if it dropped below 100.

I was stationed 29 palms for awhile and I couldn't stand how hot it was out there.
