Broken front derailleur? wtf?
Well my Deda 215 bars arrived from probikekit last night, and of course I mounted them up first thing this morning. After I got them on, I ended up wrapping them with white bar tape instead of the usual black, because that's all I had in my shop, and I didn't feel like hiking up to the LBS.
So I took the bike for a little 15-mile test ride at lunch today, and the bars feel really nice. A bit wider (46cm o-o compared to 44cm c-c on the old bars). The bend is much, much nicer too, and the reach is a bit less, allowing me to stand while in the drops without hitting my wrists against the top bend.
So as I ride, I notice the wind kicking up. And the sky is quickly blackening. I start to kick up the speed, and I get to an intersection where I have to turn right and climb. So I make my turn and drop down to the small chainring, and BAM, the chain drops. Unusual. More unusual is that it won't climb back on when I upshift. So I stop to inspect things, and notice the front derailleur is jammed in the chainrings. So I figure the bolt must have loosened, so I get an allen wrench out to fix it, but it's tight. Like, too tight for it to have slipped. I remove the bolt and find this (see images below).
The threads seemed to have pulled out of the aluminum. So now I guess I need a new derailleur, and this one is only 2 yrs old. The only reason I can think of as to why this would happen is... so that I can get my hands all greasy and screw up my new white bar tape. Son of a... @#$%
(btw, sorry for the blurry pics. My crap digi cam won't do close-ups)
