Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What would you do???

I received my bike back from FedEx on Saturday (returned from my Lake Tahoe trip). Anyway, I know how I packed my bike (and my coach has corroborated my story, cause he helped me pack it). So, I get the bike back and there is a skewer missing, the headset is missing (I assume it is maybe just the cover that "buffers" the stem from the headtube since the headset is integrated inside the headtube...not real sure), headset bolt missing, the rear wheel had been put in the box (hard palstic case where the bike actually stands up and locks into the front with a fork lock and there are two velcro straps that go around the chain stays) so that the cassette was resting inside the H2O bottle cages, eating them all to hell...and the frame had apparently been dropped or something...there are about 6 dings/scrapes/dents/scratches on the frame and crank arm.

Now, I had the bike insured for $4000. However, the people that actually shipped the bike have to make the claim on my behalf, and the guy that does that will not be in until Thursday.

So, my question would be...
1) try to recoup the total value of insurance ($4000)
2) try to recoup the total value of missing/damaged parts (maybe $500)
3) another option

Thanks,
mscycler

Option 2.

They can dicker you down. Gives you room to manuever. Are you sure the frame is still sound?

Visually, yes...Structurally, not sure. However, either way, I could get a new frame. I have a lifetime warranty on the frame (yes, I am the original owner).

You will waste your time if you go for #1... They will only pay as much as they need to in order to get your equipment back to what it was like before it was shipped.

Your question in the automotive world would be like:

My car was keyed, should I have the insurance company replace the door or the whole car?

You can ask the question as much as you want, but the answer is irrelevant, as the insurance company is going to pay for just enough... You have no options for getting any more.

If you haven't sustained a $4,000 loss, this would be a fraud.

Yeah, kinda along the same line I was thinking...

However, how can I tell if the frame has sustained "real" damage?

Like I stated earlier, the frame visually is ok (minus the scratches/dings/etc...)

You can get an opinion from a reputable bike shop, or framebuilder.

It seems to me you should be able to strip the componets from the frame and take it to a good automotive machine shop to have it Magna-Fluxed. This uses a magnetic field to spot hidden defects and can (supposedly) be used on Aluminum heads, so a frame should be ok too.

Any insurance co. is going to ask you for estimates anyway. Might as well get started by heading to the LBS.
