Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Penguin Sport Wash?

What so special about this stuff, what's in it, where do I get it cheap and is there a substitute?

The main feature of these products (also including Nikwax Tech Wash, and REI's own brand, among others) is that they don't contain any perfumes, softeners, or other gunk that will leave residues that allegedly degrade wicking and breathability of technical fabrics and membranes (e.g. Goretex). Plus they are supposed to be less harsh than standard laundry detergent. That's the theory anyway.

I would love to find a cheap substitute myself, as I'm sure you could mix up a batch for a tiny fraction of what this stuff costs. I've seen DIY recipes for laundry detergent using ingredients like Fels naptha, washing soda, and borax, but I don't know if this is the right stuff to use.

At $10 a bottle, 18 washes, that gets kinda spendy.

I wonder if Whole Foods has a solution.
