Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New wheelset: Cane Creek or Neuvation. Recommendations??

I'm planning to Finally upgrade from >10yrs. old Mavic Mach 2 rims w/DA hubs (very durable, but heavy) to something lighter. I'm currently looking at the Cane Creek Volos (or possibly the older Aerohead model) and Neuvation's R28 Aero.

I'm not heavy (145), so these might be overkill in terms of stiffness, but since my budget's limited these seem to be good deals...

Those of you who'Ve experienced one or both of these wheelsets -- any recommendations??

Also, no one seems to be able to say with any certainty if I can use my old DA Hyperglide 8spd. cogs (made in the early '90s) with the Volos set. Anyone have the answer? (Performance and Neuvation have let me know that the Aerohead and R28s will).

Thanks!!

I've no problem with my 8 speed cassette on the Volos. Just as long as you don't use a cassette where the biggest cog is smaller than a 23. If you use (say a 12-21) 8-speed cassette, your 8-speed chain will rub against the flanges when you shift into that cog. Adding enough spacers will clear it, but you need to make sure you lockring has enough thread to still lock...and that you're still clear for the smallest cog-->that it doesn't rub against the frame.

In my experience, Neuvation = junk. I went through two sets of M28 Aero wheels before giving up. First set had several problems including broken spokes, second set broke a rear hub flange at 1400 miles. For about the same money, you can get a decent shop to build you a set of better-performing, more durable wheels...Try DA or Ultegra hubs, Open Pro or DT rr1.1 rims, good double-butted spokes in a 32h 3x pattern. Not as sexy as the wheels you are pondering, but they'll probably be more reliable and perform at least as well.

We have had great experience with Neuvation wheels (R28 Aero) on a couple of bikes in my family. 4,000 miles and a Texas State Championship on one set. About 1,200 miles on the other set. And the only issue is a spoke that came loose and needed to be tightened.

I just got a set of Neuvation M28s. Seem good so far, but I literally put them on yesterday and only did a 10 mile test ride....

What I can say is that John from Neuvation is Very responsive. My first email to him was on a Sunday and he responded within hours. I had a few other question and again he was super responsive.

As for the wheels they seem good I am 200lbs and the feel nice and solid. The hubs are very smooth, if I hold the axle in my hand the give the wheel a little push it spins forever and is silent. (don't know if that is really a judge of good hubs...but seems good)

I'll post more info once I get about 1k on the wheels.

Yeah, John Neugent IS very responsive -- every time my wheels failed, he dealt with the problem satisfactorily and quickly. But at a certain point I just want to ride the damn bike and not keep dealing with mechanical failures -- especially when they occur unexpectedly and far from home. I'm glad others are having good experiences with the wheels, but I am through with them.

Thanks folks.
After reading the comments here and another forum, I'm leaning toward CC.
As I'm seeing/receiving both views about compatability/incompatability of the CCs with my old DA cogs, though, I'll need to ID a seller with good return terms in case I need to do that. I think Performance was good with that (no restocking fee).

The hubs on the Neuvations have been redesigned due to troubles that people were having with the old design. Their new models are R28 SL2 Aero, now on the website.

I don't have them, but I'm considering buying a set and found this out during my research.
