Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What group is this??? Bragging rights are on the line - if you get it you are a real Campy expert and BF defacto Campy God/Goddess. I need group and year/vintage.

It's a C-Record rear der, circa 1988-89 - with matching C-Record hub laced to an Omega Strada Hardox rim. Looks like it could be on a Merckx or a Bottecchia.

Not sure about the brakes - they are very nice and certainly not the Cobalto. Are they the final generation - 1990/91 C-Record?

These are mine:

Brakes look like what those I used to have on my Schwinn Prologue. I was told at the time they were Chorus Monoplanars but the source didn't appear to be sure.

PS. A front-on picture would probably help, along with one of any markings. Also, there's a site at www.campyonly.com which is full of experts. There's a discussion forum there that could help: https://www.campyonly.com/phpBB2/index.php

Here is a head-on view of front brake as requested. I had one person hypothesize it's Athena. Rad wins the BF God Award for id of the rear derailleur - who's gonna help with the brake?

Those look like Athena brakes. The monoplanar design actually had a split-arm on one side so that the opposite arm actually goes through the middle of it. Not so in this case, at least from what I can see from the photos. How about a 6mp close-up of the brake-caliper from both sides?

Them brakes be a mystery - we've had Xenon, Athena, Chorus, and Record as guesses. Only thing for sure is they are not Delta !!!!

They are not '91 Xenon because bike had them as original euipment and it's a late 80's Atala Italian steel road bike.

Chorus, maybe 89,90 or 91. I still have a set of those brakes in a box in my kitchen, they were original equipment on my 90 Pinarello Montello.

Any way you look at it, it's a sweet bike. Please give us more details.

Was I right on the wheels?

The brakes have been positively identified as Athena late 80's by several BF folks who have same group on their late 80's bikes - in particular the brakes are very distinctive, and from their feedback they all like them a lot.

But Rad 55 thinks the rear der is C-Record, which would make this a mixed group. I have not received the bike yet, so I don't know anymore. Stay tuned.

I can't be trusted - I'm too new to the Campy classic clan. But that rear der looks exactly like my '89 C-Record, which I've had now for all of 2 weeks. That's the problem I have with older Campy stuff - even the hardcores sometimes have a problem identifying certain pieces from photos. A lot of the stuff looks similar and isn't clearly marked.

What did the seller say?

Another problem is that often one year's Record will be the Chorus a couple years later. Same casting, maybe a slight downgrade in the quality of the finish. I really like the brakes too, and always been a fan of the C-Record look.

Seller said Record.

I have not received the bike yet. Once I get it I'l post some porn and more info.

I was really looking for an older bike in great shape with NR or SR to be my second bike, but this Atala frame just looked so sweet, and it was all Campy so I thought what the heck.
