Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My fathers day ride..

Started in Sisters Oregon, rode west over the Santiam pass, then back over to sisters via the mckenzie pass. Wish I had some pictures...I forgot my camera...though I may post some that a friend took. Beautiful scenery. Some of the best that Oregon has to offer for sure.

Felt amazing climbing... the new bike kicks ass even loaded down with an extra few pounds of food and gear...just in case. Really looking forward to barlow trail next weekend.

* Distance 87.51 miles
* Time 06:02:01
* Max Speed 46.30 mph
* Average Speed 14.50 mph
* Elevation 7686.00 feet
* Average Pace 4:08 min/mile

I am really jealous of you cause that sounds like an incredible ride! Sweet #s too.

Jakey, something you would appreciate, I hit a new high speed on Saturday: 56.8mph. Coming off Mt. Livingston on my second attempt. Only hit 51.5mph the first time, so I climbed back up.
Like I've heard you say, it would be nice to hit 60mph just once.

Which day is Barlow?

I am not real fond of the Santiam pass, it's rather boring, but coming back over the McKensie pass, that is some tough climbing on some narrow roads. I also think it is one of the prettiest rides in Oregon. Congrats.

Sunday. Great support, nice scenery, tough climbs. Horrible pavement. haha. - the barlow that is.

As far as santiam...it was boring, but it was early enough in the morning that the traffic wasn't too bad and the grade is never horrible. It actually seemed alot worse in the car. Mckenzie was awesome, and since the snow gate is still closed you don't have to worry about cars on the tough parts...at least for another week or so. I don't think I would ride it when its open to cars, but I might make this an annual ride before they open the gates. TONS of cyclists up there.

..and the pizza in sisters never tasted better

Sounds like a great ride, sorry I had to miss it, I couldn't come over to Sisters on Saturday, and didn't want to get up that early to drive it on Sunday. BTW, it's usually not too bad riding with the road open to cars, an early start on the McKenzie River side and it's fine.

I ended up riding from Florence to Newport and back on highway 101.....SWEET!!!! 100 miles and very light traffic. I think a Bike Forums ride for this one is a MUST, I can arrange an house to stay in in Florence.

Sounds awesome! My ride consisted of 3 miles at a snail's pace...with my 2 daughters in tow. Their 20" bikes just don't keep up - but I loved every minute of it. Hopefully in the next few years, they stick with it and we can REALLY go for a ride!

I'm thinking of doing this loop tomorrow. Was there any place to refill your bottles along the route?
